The San Francisco 49ers capped a strong first half against the Green Bay Packers with a little bit of NFL history.
As the half ticked away to nothing, 49ers kicker David Akers brought Lambeau Field to its knees with a 63-yard field goal, tied for longest in NFL history.
Akers' mind-melter took a beautiful (and fortunate) bounce off the crossbar, pulling him into an exclusive group with three other record-makers:
» Tom Dempsey was the first to hit from 63 yards out on Nov. 8, 1970, helping the New Orleans Saints beat the Detroit Lions as time expired.
» Dempsey's record stood alone for 28 years until Jason Elam tied the mark with the Denver Broncos in 1998.
»Oakland Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski was third to do the deed last September against the Broncos.
As you can see, this doesn't happen frequently.
