Personality

Damon Salvatore was originally a very free-spirited young man; he always knows how to have a good time. After he was turned, he changed into a completely different person: selfish and cold. Damon turned into a dangerous, carefree blood sucker. He is arrogant and sarcastic, impulsive most of the time. Damon developed a great ability to hide his feelings, and pretend he has no humanity left. He is known for his self-destructive behavior, and his devious, sadistic mind. Though, Damon knows how to control himself. He likes to play games with people, and make unnecessary sarcastic comments. He likes to chase the prey before the deadly catch. Damon only trusts a handful of people, but anyone would be stupid to trust him. He is very protective of the small group people he loves. Through the time elapsed, Damon turns slighter kinder, just to impress a certain doppelgänger. Damon is also very self-confident, taunting and daring other stronger and older creatures, but he couldn’t care less. Damon is rather self hating. He believes the worst in himself and when people say he is bad, he proves them right because he believes he can’t do any better. However, he lives by the philosophy of being bad with a purpose. Everything he does has a reason behind it which is almost why he goes in to his self-destructive phrases. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t fun. He strives on being the fun brother who gets all the girls so this Salvatore doesn’t go without his flirtatious side. He is cocky and vain on occasion and pretends not to see his faults. Damon may appear selfish but he would give everything he could to those he loves - especially his younger brother Stefan. He may make mistakes but he’d do anything for him.

Past

Damon Salvatore was born in Mystic Falls, Virginia in 1840 to Giuseppe Salvatore and his wife. Being the elder of the Salvatore brothers, Damon was tall, dark, charming, and intelligent. He grew up with a privileged life, a member of one of the Founding Families of Mystic Falls. He enjoyed a close sibling relationship with his brother Stefan, even though they were about six years apart from each other. Sometime when the Civil War broke out in Mystic Falls, Damon enlisted in the Confederate Army and served his time in the Army - fighting for his state. However, Damon returned to Mystic shortly when he was on leave. When he returned on his leave, he found a young woman living in the Salvatore Boarding House. Damon Salvatore fell in love with a peculiar young Petrova, Katherine Pierce. He wasn’t the only one that fell in love with her, his very own brother Stefan did as well. He knew that Katherine was a vampire, and he willingly drank her blood, and didn’t fear what she was. Unlike his brother, his love was not compelled by the beautiful vampire and so all of his feelings were always true to Katherine. He accepted her as his first true love; he wanted to spend forever with this enchanting young brunette. But alas, Katherine had other plans. She faked her death, pretending to die with a group of vampires in Fell’s Church, pretending to be sealed into a tomb full of desiccating vampires. Damon spend over a hundred years pining for Katherine, his lost love.

Damon spent years in the company of many women trying to replace the Petrova he originally met but he was secretly trying to find a way to get Katherine back and out of the tomb. When Damon returned to Mystic Falls, he found the 3rd Petrova doppelgänger, Elena Gilbert. Originally, he wished to use her to find a way to get Katherine free but when he discovered the truth that Katherine was actually in the tomb and lied for over a hundred years, his attentions turned to Elena. She managed to crawl into his heart, making Damon fall hopelessly in love with her. But yet again, he had to fight for her affection, due to her relationship with Stefan. It was a fight he could never win, though he cared deeply for her, and saved her more than once. The Originals stirred up more trouble for the Salvatore’s and Elena when they wished to use her blood to break Klaus’s hybrid curse. But it didn’t end there, they then required Elena’s human blood to make hybrids. When Elena died in a car accident caused by Rebekah Mikaelson, Damon felt like his whole world was crushed. His best friend Alaric was dead and originally, he believed Elena to be dead due to them being connected - if Elena died, Alaric/Dark Alaric would be dead. But the twist was that Elena had died with Damon’s blood in her system and ultimately sired to Damon due to her strong feelings towards him. So Damon took it upon himself to teach the new born vampire how to harness everything it was to be a vampire.

Present

Soon after Damon found out Elena was sired to him, the eldest Salvatore didn’t stop until he and Elena found a way to break the sire bond. Different from what he thought, Elena proves to love him and it didn’t take too long until they were getting married. The marriage didn’t last long though, since Elena felt lost with the death of her best friend and filled for the annulment. Broken hearted, Damon returned to his old ways in hopes to forget Elena, worrying his friends and his brother. With Elena’s return and her life being put at risk by Klaus Mikaelson, the couple found their way back to each other, overcoming many problems, such as Elena being turned human again and Damon’s brief death. Once again Damon and Elena got married and life was good to them. Until the Augustine returned, kidnapping Damon and torturing him for all the Whitmore lives he took. Heidi and Elena found a way to save his life and now free, and having had enough of his life as a vampire and his never ending fear of something bad happening, Damon finally took the cure. Now, as a human, he hopes at least the Augustine will leave him alone.
