What is Playa del Carmen?

Playa del Carmen is a popular tourist destination in Mexico, located in an area called the  Mayan Riviera.

 

Where is Playa del Carmen?

Playa del Carmen is a town, which is in the Riviera Maya.

The Riviera Maya is also called the Mayan Riviera and is an area, which runs from just south of Cancun, until Tulum, and the entrance of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere.

The Riviera Maya is roughly 200km “long” and includes areas such as Riviera Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal and Tulum.

Playa del Carmen is located in the state of Quintana Roo, which is located in the most Eastern part of Mexico. This area of Mexico is the Yucatan Peninsula, which is comprised of the state of Yucatan, Campeche and the state of Quintana Roo.

Tell me about Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen started out as a Fisherman’s village, as many as 110 years ago.

The white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and laid-back feel have made it a popular destination for tourists. In the 1990′s, it is said that the population grew from 2000 to 20,000 making it the fastest growing city in Mexico, a title that still holds today.

The current approximate population is 150,000 including expatriates from over 40 countries.

 

How do you get to Playa del Carmen?

The closest airport to Playa del Carmen is Cancun Airport. We are about 45 minutes south of the airport.

If you book an all inclusive vacation, chances are that your return airport transportation is included. If you require transportation, please contact us, we can help!

Because of its location within Mexico, driving from the US/Mexico border takes about 30 hours, so flying to Playa del Carmen is a more popular option.

Playa del Carmen, will simply be referred to as “Playa” by the locals.

Tourists will sometimes mistakenly call it Carmen del Carmen, Carmen del Playa, Playa el Carmen, Playa Carmen, Playa Del, Playas del Carmen, Playa del Carman etc.. you get the idea. It can be a mouthful when you are not familiar with it, so feel free to call it Playa and you’ll fit right in!

Is Playa del Carmen safe?

Mexico has a bad reputation for being a dangerous country, but just like anywhere there are areas to avoid.

The Mayan Riviera is generally a safe area, with very little for the tourists to worry about.

Many people want know, is Playa del Carmen safe?

The short answer is yes, but use common sense. Don’t wander around drunk (and/or alone) after dark. When out at night, watch your drink. Make sure you cannot be easily pick-pocketed.

You can definitely talk to strangers, but trust your gut. Wear your seat belt (even if the locals aren’t).

Don’t do anything illegal, and don’t hang out with people who do. Wouldn’t you follow these same guidelines at home?
