Know MoreIt's the battle of the thermostats every day, at work and home. The men feel hot all the time and complain about inadequate air conditioning, while the women huddle in shawls and sweaters. There are constant calls to the guy who mans the central air-conditioner, as he plays an odd rhythm of switch on-switch off. It's the same battle at home with your male family members. Why do women feel the cold more often than men? Take a look at these reasons for this weird phenomenon. It may help you tackle your chills.
1. You are too thin: When you're underweight, you lack an adequate level of body fat to insulate you from cold temperatures. If you are skimping on calories to maintain that weight, then you are compromising on your body's metabolism. Try including healthy foods with proteins, fat and complex carbs to maintain body heat.
2. You have thyroid imbalance: Inadequate secretion of thyroid slows down your metabolism, preventing your body from producing adequate heat. Other signs of hypothyroidism are thinning hair, dry skin and fatigue.
3. Women are better at conserving heat: This point probably makes you go, 'Say what?', for it just doesn't seem to add up. But scientists have discovered that women have a more evenly distributed fat layer and can pull all their blood back to their core organs, thus conserving body heat. But this also means that less blood flows to their hands and feet and as a result they feel cold.
4. You don't get enough sleep: When you're fatigued from a restless night, your metabolism works at a more sluggish pace producing less heat and slower circulation.
5. You are experiencing dehydration: Water helps regulate body temperature. It traps heat and releases it slowly, keeping your body temperature in a comfortable zone. With less water, your body is more sensitive to extreme temperatures.
6. You are anaemic: Iron is a key mineral that helps your red blood cells carry oxygen throughout your body, bringing heat and other nutrients to every cell in your system. Without enough iron, red blood cells can't effectively do their job and you shiver. Include more leafy greens in your diet.
7. You are deficient in vitamin B12: Your body needs vitamin B12, derived from animal products, to make red blood cells, which carry oxygen through your system. Inadequate amount of B12 in your blood can lead to pernicious anaemia or lack of red blood cells, thus making you shiver.
8. It's that time of the month: That's right, feeling cold may actually just be you PMSing. Women's perception of cold varies according to their menstrual cycle stages, because the body temperature does actually vary by one degree. That's quite a marked change as far as human bodies go. If your cold hands and feet are accompanied by tiredness and bloating, you may be sure that its PMS.
9. You may have diabetes: Diabetes that's not kept in check can lead to a condition called peripheral nephropathy, a constant attack on the nerves, which provide sensation to your hands and feet. Since these nerves are also responsible for sending message to the brain regarding temperature sensation, your hands and feet may feel cold.
10. Build up your muscle: Muscle helps maintain body temperature by producing heat. Women feel the cold more often than men because we have lesser musculature. You needn't sport lumpy biceps, but you can still build up the muscle percentage in your body to feel warmer.
