First dates are awkward and draining, both mentally and emotionally. Unfortunately, we mostly come away from every first date feeling either terribly or completely unsure whether this will translate into something better. What if he wasn't interested. Even worse, what if he was interested, but I didn't pick the signs. We'd like to say that when the right person comes along, you will have none of these doubts. But in the meantime, you could check our handy list on the kind of things men do when they want a second date. It's not foolproof, but it is useful, we assure you.

1. He makes eye contact, making sure you know he's doing so deliberately. He wants to make it clear that he is interested in you.

2. He will be actively involved in your conversation, actually listening to you and asking the right questions.

3. The guy will slip out one or two personal details in a very matter of fact manner that is very different from the guarded yet flirtatious behaviour men exhibit when they want something casual only.

4. He will evince interest in your background over dinner, your ambitions, hobbies etc.

5. You may be sure that he will tell you how beautiful you are. But the manner will be admiring rather than the slightly horny, end-of-the-date kind of compliment which gets triggered off when you accidentally touch his hand.

6. He will pick up the cheque at the end of the dinner and wave aside your protests with a quickly slipped in hint that you can pay the next time. Besides, he wants to make it clear that only friends go dutch and this is a date, a proper one.

7. After the date, he may drop you home and walk you to the door, partly out of concern for your safety and partly because he wants to prolong the date for those extra few minutes. If he lingers outside your house talking to you, then this guy definitely wants a second date.

8. Kissing may be on the cards, but he will be gentle, hesitant even, just so that you don't get spooked. Don't worry if he doesn't grab you like a sack of coal to kiss you, he is playing the gentle waiting game. This is where the ball is in your court.

9. A sure sign that he wants a second date is the post-date text that arrives. It maybe as soon as he reaches home or the next day morning. It will be one of those polite texts saying what a good time he had and hope to do it again or something else to that effect. If you kissed, you will definitely get a text saying he is thinking about your kiss. That's your cue to continue that conversation. Don't misunderstand it for a pick-up line.

10. The best sign is when he actually asks you directly. He may bring up some movie or band that you guys discussed, saying hey, you wanna go see them sometime? Just grab the opportunity with both hands.
