10 Tips and Tricks to a Fast and Cool-Looking Pinewood Derby Car
10 Tips and Tricks to a Fast and Cool Looking Pinewood Derby Car
There are countless books, videos, and articles on how to build the fastest Pinewood Derby car—but sometimes it helps to start simple. We’ve gathered a few of our favorite Pinewood Derby tips that balance speed, creativity, and fun. Whether you’re helping your Cub Scout with their first race or looking to improve last year’s design, these techniques can help your car look sharp and perform even better.
From baking your Pinewood Derby block to reduce moisture, to polishing axles for less friction, to finishing with a smooth coat of paint, each step makes a real difference on the track. Every adjustment counts, and the process itself is part of the excitement.
Start early, plan ahead, and enjoy the build together. The real victory comes from learning, experimenting, and creating a car that reflects your Scout’s imagination.
The Pinewood Derby is one of the most anticipated events in Cub Scouting.
10 Tips for a Fast and Cool Looking Pinewood Derby Car
Bake your block
Max out your weight at the regulation 5 ounces
Use all of the graphite
Sand and polish your wheels and axles
Check alignment
Spend time sanding
Use a high-quality paint
Add decals
Mount headlights, taillights, and running lights
Use floor wax and shine to a high-shine finish
Bake Your Block
Before you start shaping and painting your Pinewood Derby car, take a simple but effective step that can boost performance—baking the wooden block. Baking helps remove moisture from the wood, making it lighter and easier to fine-tune your car’s weight placement later on.
Set your oven to 250°F and place the block on a foil-lined baking sheet. Bake for about two hours to allow moisture to evaporate evenly. Let the block cool completely before sanding or cutting. You’ll notice it feels lighter and smoother, which helps when adjusting balance and aerodynamics.
Safety First: Always have a parent or adult present during this step. The oven will get hot, and the wood can retain heat after baking. Never leave the oven unattended, and use oven mitts when handling the block.
This process gives your Cub Scout a chance to learn about safe tool use and careful planning—key skills in both Scouting and life. A little patience and supervision go a long way toward a faster, safer, and more rewarding Pinewood Derby build.

Max Out Your Weight at the Regulation 5 Ounces
Yes, it may take more time and effort, but those extra couple of ounces have proven time and time again that they make a difference. Place all of the weight you can about an inch in front of the rear axle. The closer the weight to the back, the faster your car will roll (but you don’t want it too far back, or your car will be popping a wheelie). For a more aerodynamic build, have a drill and a spade drill bit on-hand to put your weight up and into the bottom of your car. Various weight types are available, and I have also seen pennies used!
Pinewood Derby Scale
Pinewood Derby Scale - Compact, portable scale is handy during the design phase but is essential for conducting a smooth and fair race on derby day.
Stylish in design and color; accurate digital scale displays in pounds, ounces, or grams with an 11 lb. capacity and tare feature.
Operates on 2AA batteries (included) and has auto shut-off for longer battery life.
Includes an easy-to-use operation manual. Other uses include home office and kitchen applications.

Use All of the Graphite
Pinewood Derby High Speed Graphite
Pinewood Derby High-Speed Graphite - Get ready to take speed to the next level of fast with this lubricating powder!
High-carbon graphite is used to lubricate the wheels of a Pinewood Derby car for increased speed and performance.
Tube-O-Lube is an odor-free, extra-fine dry powdered lubricant that is dark grey/black. Graphite should be used with adult supervision only.
Check local race rules for regulations regarding the indoor use of graphite.

Dry lubricant is usually allowed but check with your local Pinewood Derby Race committee. Coat it everywhere – all over the axles, where the wheels touch the axles, on the car itself, where the wheel can touch the car—everywhere.
Sand and Polish Your Wheels and Axles

Speed starts with precision. Before mounting your wheels, take time to smooth out your Pinewood Derby axles. Even tiny ridges can create friction and slow your car down. Use a mini file or fine-grit sandpaper to remove any rough spots along the axle. The smoother the surface, the faster your car can roll.
For best results, mount each wheel and axle onto an electric drill. Spinning the axle at a higher speed allows you to polish it evenly and achieve a mirror-smooth finish. This method also helps prevent new scratches or uneven spots that could develop from hand sanding alone.
Once your axles are smooth and shiny, clean them with a soft cloth before applying graphite or another approved lubricant. This simple step can make a noticeable difference in performance—and might just be the secret edge that wins the race.
Check Alignment
If you want to get in-depth with this, and it is not against your pack’s rules, adjust your car to allow it to ride a rail – this is better than your car bumping back and forth between bumpers. Another way to pick up speed is to ensure that your car has a true straight alignment. Level one, just run your car down a level surface and ensure it doesn’t pull one way or another. Level two, use an Axle Press Tool to ensure straight axles. You can also glue your axles to ensure there is no wiggling out of place – just make sure not to get glue anywhere near your wheels!

Spend Time Sanding
The smoother your car is, the more friction is reduced and the faster your car can slice through the air. Start with a coarse grit, move to a medium grit, and finish with a fine grit. It is helpful to wrap the sanding paper around another block of wood for better grip and to help prevent the addition of unwanted dips in your car. You can also up the ante by wet sanding the car after the first coat of paint (so primer, then paint, then wet sand). We have used 1000 grit ultrafine carbide sandpaper. After this, proceed on with painting the rest of your coats!

Use a High-Quality Paint
I have found the most amazing paints. The Testors Enamel Paint Set has AMAZING coverage, plus a great shine. The Testors Glow-In-The-Dark Paint Set and the Testors Fluorescent Paint Set are also awesome options. The KEY to the best coverage and results: START WITH A GOOD PRIMER! Especially if you are using the Glow-in-the-Dark or Fluorescent paints. The next tip on painting is to use a wide sponge to paint. It creates a much smoother surface.

Add Decals
Use a credit card to press out all of the air bubbles, and then seal everything in with a clear gloss paint. Be sure to check to make sure it won’t curl your decals first! You can test it off to the side by sticking a decal to a piece of plastic and spraying it with the gloss paint.

Mount Headlights, Taillights, and Running Lights
Add the finishing touches that make your Pinewood Derby car stand out. Installing small headlights, taillights, or running lights gives your car a professional, realistic look that’s sure to grab attention on race day.
You can find lightweight LED light kits made specifically for Pinewood Derby cars. These are easy to attach and won’t slow your car down. Most kits come with simple wiring and adhesive backing, so you can mount the lights in minutes.
Before attaching, double-check your placement to keep the car balanced. Then secure the wires neatly underneath or along the frame. Once everything is set, test the lights to make sure they shine bright all the way to the finish line.
Adding lights is a small step that makes a big visual impact—and adds a fun, creative twist your Scout will be proud of.
Every Season, Scouts Build Cool Pinewood Derby Race Cars
Use Floor Wax and Shine to a High-Shine Finish
When your Pinewood Derby car’s paint is completely dry—give it about a week to cure—you’re ready for the final touch that takes your car from good to great. Applying floor wax or a high-gloss polish will give your Pinewood Derby car a mirror-like shine that stands out on race day.
Use a soft, clean cloth and apply a thin layer of floor wax in small, circular motions. Let it dry, then buff gently until you achieve a deep, reflective finish. This step not only makes your car look sleek but can also improve aerodynamics by creating a smoother surface for air to flow over.
Patience is key here. Each layer should be fully set before polishing to perfection. The result? A car that turns heads before it even hits the track.
Give Yourself the Gift of Time Before Pinewood Derby Season
The best Pinewood Derby cars don’t just happen overnight—they’re built with patience, creativity, and plenty of trial and error. Pinewood Derby season is right around the corner, so now is the perfect time to start building your car. Getting an early start allows you and your Cub Scout to plan, test, and refine every detail before race day.
Starting early also takes the pressure off. You’ll have time to sand, paint, and perfect your design without last-minute stress. And if something goes wrong? That’s part of the fun. Mistakes turn into learning moments, teaching valuable lessons in problem-solving and time management—skills that matter both on and off the track.
So, gather your tools, pick your design, and start your engines. The excitement of the countdown to Pinewood Derby begins now.
Happy racing, Scouts!
