10 Tips to Grow a Long Beard and Moustache

“How can I get my beard to look like yours?” That is one of the questions we get asked the most. Just have a look at the recent post “How Long” by my buddy Adam Barraclough. Whether we’re at a trade show, beard competition, or just out having dinner, people want to know how to grow a long beard and moustache.

While this article is primarily meant for people who want to grow a long beard and moustache, many of these tips are great for anyone growing facial hair.

I've been growing my own beard for just over four years and have learned a lot along the way, but I'm always on the lookout for new tips and tricks. I recently read an interview with a proclaimed “beard expert” who stated that one factor necessary to grow a long beard and moustache was to trim your beard and moustache every week. I thought that was bad advice so I decided to pass along a little of my own. You don't have control over your genetics, but you can influence nearly every other aspect of growing out your beard and moustache.

Don’t trim your beard

I thought this was obvious, but apparently not everyone agrees with me. Provided your employment and relationship allow, ideally you shouldn’t trim anything, neck and cheek lines included. You can always trim later; your first objective should be to grow out as much as possible to build a strong beard base and to see what you are working with at your fullest natural growth.

Don’t trim your moustache, train your moustache

Trimming the moustache is a mistake a lot of guys make initially, myself included. It’s easy to assume that maybe it’s okay to trim up the center and then just leave the ends of the moustache long to style a pseudo-handlebar, and if that works for you, great. But if you want to grow a true long moustache, get some moustache wax and start training it early to keep it out of your mouth. Again, it’s about seeing your fullest growth and building a foundation for a long full moustache.

Start using beard oil and Beard Dry Oil early

Beard product usage isn’t dictated by length, it’s dictated by the presence of facial hair. Start taking care of yours early and you’ll thank yourself later on. A properly conditioned and cared for beard is the only way to reach your fullest growth potential.

Develop your own total care regimen early

Figure out a routine that works for you and stick to it, every day. Personally, I wash my beard every morning, apply beard oil (usually Wisdom) after the shower, and Beard Dry Oil (also Wisdom) at night. Both applications are accompanied by a thorough brushing. Your own routine may be different, but pick one and make it yours.

Brush and/or comb your beard every day

Many men will notice as their beards grow out that they have weird bends or curves in the hair pattern and a daily brushing combined with use of Beard Dry Oil will help train the hairs to lie the way you want, ensuring an even beard that requires no trimming. Many also notice that as their beard gains length and weight, these curves settle down.

Be aware of your surroundings

The longer your beard and moustache get, the more likely they are to get caught in the zipper of a coat, burnt by an errant cigarette, or dipped in soup when you lean too far forward while eating. Take care to notice the little changes as your facial hair gets longer.

Judge your beard on its own merit, not by that of beards around you

Facial hair grows at different rates and in different patterns. Just because yours isn’t growing as fast as a friend’s doesn’t mean it won’t catch up, or perhaps be better one day.

Be patient

See above. Facial hair grows at an average rate of only half an inch per month, and nearly everyone experiences a time where it seems like their beard and moustache aren’t growing. It happens, just be ready for it. By the same token, there will be times where it seems to grow two inches in a month. Celebrate those times, but don’t despair in the others.

Figure out the best way to eat with your beard and moustache

For more helpful info, check out another recent post, Top 5 Tips For Eating With A Moustache. Careless eating can see multiple hairs pulled out, and many foreign substances that come into contact with your beard (food included) can dry it out and damage the hairs.

Track your progress

Whether you measure, or simply take a selfie every month (do it in the same shirt every time for the best results) to chart your progress, keep up with how your beard is doing. Over time, you’ll start to learn growth patterns and even see if particular seasons have a positive or negative effect on your beard. This knowledge will help you worry less during those times where it seems it’s not growing.Growing a long beard and moustache isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon, and no marathon winner became a winner overnight. Put the time in and take care of your beard and you’ll grow the best beard you can.

    Hi Larry,

Tim here. Thanks for stopping by the blog! I understand you are wanting that goatee to get longer. Apart from the advice to stay patient and not trim it, there isn’t much else I can say. Your facial hair growth (pattern, fullness, etc) basically boils down to your genetics and every guy’s facial hair has a different terminal length that it won’t grow past. Stay patient, make sure your skin and goatee are clean and conditioned, and let it grow. That’s the best advice I can give.

    Take care,

    Tim

Thank you for the good information! I have a goatee that I’ve been growing for about 3 years (I’ve had it about 15 yrs. total, but used to keep it short) it seems to grow to about 3 inches and stops. What can I do to make it grow longer? I’m 63 yrs old in good health.

    Hi Amandus,

Tim here. Thank you so much for checking out the blog! I’m happy to hear you are committing to growing out the beard this time around. Stay super patient and let it grow. It sounds like you have a good regimen in place for keeping the beard and skin clean and conditioned.

Trimming is really up to your personal preference. Some guys like to just let it grow while others like to keep it a bit more tidy and clean. I personally trim a few times a year and didn’t do anything with my cheek lines until going to a barber last year.

Dry beard oil is our take on beard balm. We call our beard balm Dry Oil because it’s a solid at room temperature, it will melt with slight friction or in the palm of your hand for easy application. It offers the same conditioning properties as our liquid beard oil and while Beard Dry Oil is not a styling product, it may help tame flyaways and give you some very light shaping and hold.

Let me know if I can help with anything else.

    Take care and stay bearded,

    Great article!

I have been trying to grow my beard out for years but everytime its gets long, I get irritated and shave it off. This time I am sticking it out and going for it! I shampoo my beard every day and apply beard oil daily after showering. I also comb my beard 2 to 3 times a day.

How do I know when my beard is ready to be trimmed or should I just let evrything grow out together, cheeks included?

Also, what is the difference between normal beard oil and dry beard oil?

    Thank you in advance

    Hi Saul,

Tim here. Thank you for checking out the blog and for your comment. I’m guessing you mean there are some gaps in your beard? Or you just mean it is pretty wild and hard to tame? If it is the former, the best bet is to stay patient and make sure you are keeping your skin and facial hair as clean and conditioned as possible. Your beard growth (pattern, fullness, etc.) is determined by your genetics so there isn’t a whole lot you can do about that. Stay patient and keeping things healthy is the best way to find out if things will fill in over time.

Hope that helps! Let me know if I can help with any other questions.

    Hey Luke,

Tim here. Hope you are well. Happy to hear you have been enjoying the products and have grown that nice beard. Thanks for checking on tips for growing that beard out. As you said, patience and no trimming will be key, especially initally for getting all the growth and fullness you can get.

A lot of the questions you have about cheeks, chin, neck, etc. really come down to personal preference. We all have different shaped faces and we all grow different beards. I would say your best bet is to let everything grow out and then start to think about maybe trimming areas back a bit if it helps your beard stand out in the ways you want it to. Does that make sense? We have an article on growing a beard according to face shape that would be good to read if you haven’t already: https://www.canyouhandlebar.com/blogs/beard-care/beard-growing-tips-based-on-your-face-shape

So yeah, I would let it all grow out and then start to think about ways you may want to trim or shape. Start small with any trimming or changes. It may even be worth talking to a local barber to see if they have insight. I had my barber do a little trimming on my beard for the first time last year and though it took some getting used to, I did like the results.

Let me know if I can help with anything else. Stay bearded.

I’ve used your products for some time now and have a nice beard if I do say so. I’m wanting to grow it out with intentionality this time. Typically I keep a neat shorter beard. It’s not the densest face forest, but i have high hopes. My chin and neck grow much thicker than my cheeks, though they aren’t patchy, just finer hair. I was wondering if you have any tips or tricks to help me make the most of what I’m trying out. Like how much neck beard to grow. Do I trim the sides to Let the rest do the talking? Things like that. I’ve grown out a successful handlebar before. So I know about patience and no trimming.

I’m assuming you haven’t been trimming there and it just doesn’t grow in? Your beard growth (pattern, fullness, and length) all come from your genetics so honestly there is not much you can do besides stay super patient and hope that it will eventually fill in. If it doesn’t, don’t worry! Embrace what you can grow and take good care of it. Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hi Ryan,

Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog and for your questions about growing that beard longer and trimming those dead ends. Your beard growth (pattern, length, fullness) is largely determined by your genes. Every beard has what is called a terminal length and it varies for every beard. The only way to really find out is to just keep letting it grow without trimming. If that is your goal and how you want to rock your beard, I say go for it.

Personally, I think my best length is about 10". When my beard gets longer than that it is very thin and whispy on the ends and I just don’t like how it looks or feels so I trim it. Trimming doesn’t make it grow back longer or fuller but rather cleans it up a bit. I am not aware of any way to make a beard grow longer other than patience, time, and genetics. Hope this helps some and please let me know if I can help with anything else.

    Hi Russ,

Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog and for your question concerning the length of your goatee compared to the hair on the sides of your face.

My advice is to stay patient and let things grow. It is quite common for the hair on your chin to be longer than the hair on the sides of your face. Time and patience are about the only ways to really find out if the sides will grow in a bit to be a similar length to your goatee. If not, you can always trim or shape the goatee to be more even with the sides.

Your beard growth is determined primarily from your genetics. There isn’t much you can do about the genes you have but you can certainly get creative with the beard you can grow. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

    Hi Aditiya,

Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog and for your question! I understand you are 17 and growing your beard. In general, yes, I recommend staying really, really patient and not trimming. This gives your beard the chance to grow and it allows you to see how your beard will grow. Some folks think that shaving will stimulate faster growth but we have not seen any scientific data to support that opinion. If you plan to grow and maintain a beard as an adult, this is a great time to put that patience into practice.

    Hi Dan,

Tim here. Thanks so much for checking out the blog! First of all, I can tell you are a fighter so keep at it and stay strong. Sorry to hear about the chemo! I understand you are wanting to have a full beard. From what we have seen, there are not any legitimate products that actually make hair grow in the patchy spots. Your beard growth, both the pattern and fullness, come primarily from your genetics. The best way to find out what can grow is to just stay really patient and let it grow without trimming. I know that isn’t the best of news for you. The other approach is to make the most of what you can grow. If those sideburns just don’t come in, then maybe grow the fullness goatee you can and just rock it. I bet the Vikings had several styles of facial hair :)

I have always wanted a full long beard ever since my younger days. My problem is I could only grow a goatee, nothing on the sides would grow. Well in 2017 I had to have chemo treatments and after several years of it and losing all my hair when I finished the treatment I decided to let my hair grow and grow. I noticed that my facial hair started to come in, not full but patchy. So I am letting it grow now for several years and it not filling in much. I have a long chin beard bushy neck and some cheeks but no sideburns to speak of. My question to you is, are there any products that really work to help grow or thicken my beard on the sides of my face? I really want a real full before I die. Something like a Viking style.

    Hi Benjamin,

Tim here. Thanks for checking out our blog! I understand you are concerned about your beard being patchy and are hoping beard oil will help. I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that beard oil is certainly going to help your skin and beard be healthy. The bad news is beard oil is just a conditioner and it will not make your beard magically grow. We actually have an article written about patchy beard and if there is a “cure.” You can read that here: https://www.canyouhandlebar.com/blogs/beard-care/can-you-cure-your-patchy-beard?pos=1&_sid=5089a84a2&ss=r

In short, your beard growth, shape and fullness pretty much comes from your genes. Stay patient, let it grow, and hopefully some areas will fill in. If not, find a style that works for with given the beard you can grow.

    Hi!

Tim from Can You Handlebar here. Thanks so much for checking out the blog and for your question. I understand you are concerned about your beard not growing and it getting curly when it does.

It’s quite common for beard hair to be coarse and curly. Using a beard balm or wax can help tame those hairs some but in reality, they will likely always want to curl some. Using beard balm and a brush or comb will be your best for training those hairs.

As for the beard density, your best friends will be genetics, time, and patience. Every beard has a terminal length which is pretty much determined by genetics. There are not any “magic” products out there that will make your beard grow thicker or longer. Our products give your face and facial hair the health and conditioning needed to have the best chance for healthy growth. We address that in this blog post (please copy and paste url as I don’t have a way of adding a link): https://www.canyouhandlebar.com/blogs/beard-care/will-canyouhandlebar-products-make-your-beard-grow?pos=1&_sid=e2f38ccfb&ss=r

In conclusion, stay patient, don’t trim and let your beard grow. Keep your skin and beard clean and conditioned to give it the best chance. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

    Hi Chris,

Tim from Can You Handlebar here. Thanks for checking out the blog and for your question. Thanks for letting me know about your beard growing journey so far. I can certainly see why you would be frustrated with the variance in growth.

For us, beard care is primarily about two areas: 1. Keeping your skin and facial hair clean and 2. Keeping your skin and facial hair conditioned. These allow your skin and hair to be their healthiest which helps with growth and maintenance. A quality beard shampoo with natural ingredients helps with both. Beard oil or balm act as a leave-in conditioner to help with conditioning and a beard brush or comb help distribute the beard oil/balm as well as keeping the hair from being tangled.

As to your growth and variance in length, honestly that comes down to genetics. Every guy’s beard has a terminal length which is the longest point the facial hair will grow. Again, it is determined largely by genetics. The only other advice I can think of would be to make sure you have a great diet and that you stay super patient (as discussed above in this article). I know it’s probably not what you wanted to hear but I hope it helps some. Sometimes you just have to make the most of what you can grow and go with that style (sounds likes a goatee would be your best bet). Let me know if I can help with anything else.

    Hello,

I’ve been trying to grow my beard out for a little over a year (yeard). So far, the only part that is growing is the goatee. My goatee is roughly 2 1/2” long and the rest of my beard is 0.5” to 1”. I recently ordered beard oil and a “beard comb”. The beard brush I’ve been using was 3 dollars from a local Walmart. I recently decided to order a legit beard brush off amazon. I stopped using the beard shampoo I have because it contains alcohol and other chemicals that I’ve read actually strip my beard’s natural oils.

With that said, is there anything else I should add in my beard care? Any and all recommendations are HIGHLY approved of and many thanks in advance :)

I used to use a beard oil called “Wisdom”. It was my own personal blend inspired by the gifts of the Wiseman. It smelled amazing, but the primary benefits were for the skin (but hey, healthy hair grows from healthy skin, right?) Currently, I’m using a blend inspired by the consecration of the priests. It incorporates cedar oil, which is great for hair. Thanks for the tip about being patient during times when the beard doesn’t seem to grow. That’s what brought me here in the first place. Also, beware of babies. They like to pull.

Hey Jeremy here, I have been trying to grow my beard long and for some reason i can get it to grow up to a certain length and then it just stops i cant get it to grow any longer then up to that one length and i want it to grow long enough to braid because when i ride my Harley it gets in the way. Help me please. Its winter now and there really isn’t a lot of rideable days this time of year but come spring i start riding and i ride pretty much every day and every where i go from spring all the way to the start of the next winter. And i would really love to have it long enough to braid by that time! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

    Hi Marco,

Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog and for the question about growing your moustache. I’m glad to hear you have been thinking about it a lot. Thanks for the info on what you have done previously as that is super helpful too.

I don’t have any concerns about any of the shaving, trimming, or shaping you have done in the past. As you said, most of the growth comes from those genes anyway. The only concern I have with your skin regimen would be the saline spray. Depending on how much saline and how often you apply, it might dry out your skin and facial hair.

When growing, the main areas to focus on are: 1. Patience. It just takes time. 2. Keeping your skin and facial hair clean. 3. Condition/Hydrate – you want to make sure your skin and facial hair are conditioned and hydrated. #2 and #3 are the main caused for beard itch and flaking.

Hope this helps! Stay patient and let it grow. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

I’m just starting to lose my jitters over mustache growing. I know I don’t want to grow out my beard I made it 10 days into no shave November before I needed to clean up, and I cant handle not shaving my neck. Even though the hair grows in full on my face I just lose it… but I am curious about having one of those dapper mustaches. The thought has weighed heavily. I think I have the beard line for it or rather the beard and mustache. I left my face a goatee of my chin beard and mustache combo. Will this stunt my facial hair for a mustache at all? I know my beard will grow, I’ve done it, but I’ve never actually grown out my mustache I always shaved it till now. I need a mustache expert advice for a man in his early 20s with great facial hair gene’s. My question goes to ask: My skin regimen is a moisturizing cleanser and some lotions, a thin hand towel and vapor saline spray… anything here going to effect my mustache? I used to buff my face with a body scrubber and I swear it made my beard come in better, but my mustache might be a gentleman and not okay with hard bristles, where as my beard thinks I’m a lumberjack. Does that even make sense? I’m going to follow these tips here and see what I get.

    Hey Gator,

Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog and for the question! All of our beard oils are made with high-quality ingredients designed to help your face and facial hair stay clean, conditioned, and hydrated. Which beard oil really comes down to personal preference. We currently have 6 scented options as well as an unscented option. We’ve done our best to describe the scents and also have a “No Worries Guarantee” which means if the beard oil you order just isn’t what you expected, we’ll replace it for free. Hope that helps and let me know if I can do anything else for you.

Cheers, Tim - Can You Handlebar

    Hi Chris,

Tim here. Hahaha, dig the pun. Great question! A lot of it is going to come down to personal preference. On the practical side of things though, you’ll want the beard to be long enough for beard wear to fit and stay on. Another consideration would be to make sure you aren’t tugging or putting too much pulling on the beard as that is not good for beard hair or your skin (and honestly it can just be uncomfortable). I’d say to stay patient, let it grow out a few more inches and then try something to see how it feels.

Let me know if I can help with anything else. Stay bearded.
