10 Worst Characters On Steven Universe, According To Reddit
Maybe your like
Cartoon Network is home to some of the most exciting animated shows on television, including the upcoming series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai and the adorable spinoff We Baby Bears. The network also produced Steven Universe, which is one of the most culturally significant animated shows in recent times. Created by Rebecca Sugar, Steven Universe was lauded for its awe-inspiring world building, its diverse characters and its relatable themes.
Steven Universe has some of the most popular and loved cartoon characters in television history, such as the titular character, Steven Universe; the lovable gem Amethyst; and the feisty Peridot. However, not every character is universally loved by the fandom. On Reddit, fans of Steven Universe gave their two cents on who they think is the worst character in the show.
Garnet
Garnet is the fusion of the Gems Ruby and Sapphire. As the leader of the Crystal Gems, Garnet acts in a stoic, straightforward, and levelheaded manner. She also pacifies the Crystal Gems' infighting, seeing as both Amethyst and Pearl are headstrong characters.
However, Garnet does have an unpleasant side. She's still capable of losing her temper and panicking under pressure, which are qualities that make her seem unfit to be a leader. Redditor Crystal_959 also thinks that Garnet is the worst character in the series, as she "gets the least development of them all", especially when her character arc is compared to those of other main characters like Peridot or Lapis Lazuli.
Ronaldo
Ronaldo is the guy in charge of the deep fryer at Beach Citywalk Fries, a place Steven frequents. He loves to indulge in conspiracy theories and is usually taking note of the strange happenings that happen due to the Gems.
While he's not an innately bad person, Ronaldo has a tendency to be mean to other people and can be manipulative. This is especially apparent in an episode where he becomes jealous of Steven going on missions with the Gems. Reddit user jezx74 adds that Ronaldo "comes off as a caricature", which may be true since he reminds people of conspiracy theorists on the internet.
Pearl
Just like the Netflix show Heartstopper, Steven Universe also received a lot of praise for its LGBTQ+ representation. Pearl is a character in the show who is explicitly queer, as it was revealed that she was in love with Rose, although her feelings are one-sided at best.
After Rose gives up her physical form to birth Steven, Pearl becomes overprotective of anything that reminded her of Rose, including Steven. On Reddit, herracross12 highly dislikes Pearl as she went "overboard" and "lashed out at Steven" due to the gem's possessiveness of her former master.
Spinel
The main antagonist of Steven Universe: The Movie, Spinel was created to make Pink Diamond happy, who has just lost her Pearl to White Diamond. However, Pink Diamond abandoned Spinel, which caused the lonely gem to become vengeful and angry.
Because of how creepy Spinel is when she first appears on screen, she gets compared to villains from The Powerpuff Girls such as Him and Sedusa. However, Redditor bengi890 feels that Spinel is a "terrible follow up villain" and that her story doesn't make any narrative sense. Despite that, many still found Spinel to be a terrifying villain due to how resentful she was.
Marty
Apart from being Sour Cream's father, Marty is also the ex-manager of Greg. It is implied in the show that Marty does not have a successful music career anymore and is depending on a Guacola sponsorship to survive.
In a Reddit thread, Neo__Noir says that Marty "encapsulates everything" they hate on a fictional character. He's selfish, sly, uncaring, and apathetic. What's more, Marty doesn't seem to care for his son Sour Cream and only uses him to sell his soda.
Kevin
Kevin is a guy who pursues the nonbinary fusion of Steven and Connie named Stevonnie. But after finding out that Stevonnie is actually a fusion of two children, Kevin has decided to be more mean and spiteful towards Stevonnie.
Kevin is shown to be narcissistic, condescending, and manipulative. That's why Reddit user DajuanKev feels that Kevin gives them "psychopathic vibes". What's more, Kevin says that the reason why he acts that way is due to his sick little brother, which turns out to be a blatant lie.
Fluorite
Fluorite is a fusion of at least six multiple Gem types. Thanks to Lars, Fluorite was able to escape to Beach City and escape the Abandoned Homeworld Kindergarten alongside the other Off Colors, gems thought to be defective by Homeworld.
Because she's made up of multiple Gems, Fluorite takes a while to speak since each Gem has its own opinions and thoughts. However, Redditor YumeNaraSamete admits that they don't find this endearing and that they "hate listening to Fluorite talk". They even go as far as to say that "there's not a thing" about Fluorite that they enjoy watching.
Shep
After being left by Lars, Sadie has found a new love interest in Shep. In line with being one of the best children's shows with LGBTQ+ representation, Shep is revealed to be a non-binary character that Sadie met while she was on tour.
Shep is a very likable character due to their relaxed and laid-back personality. Despite that, Redditor Vidio_thelocalfreak thinks that Shep tries too much "to be an overachiever" and that they're being "showed off too much". Their views might have been different if the creators of the show fleshed out Shep's backstory first before making them a prominent character on the show.
Onion
Onion is not a character of many words. The half-brother of Sour Cream, Onion is a quiet character who is always ready to help people, even if the plan at hand is not well-thought-out and could get him in trouble.
Onion is also shown to have a mischievous side, as he was seen stealing tickets from an arcade machine and destroying a moped for fun. In a Reddit thread, Springwood_Slasher points out that they dislike Onion because he doesn't add anything to the show and that "his weirdness isn't fun". However, some users think that Onion exists in the show as he helps bring out Steven's compassion and kindness.
Blue Diamond
As one of the most powerful gems in the universe, Blue Diamond gets to have a special kind of power that sets her apart from the other Diamonds. She's capable of Sadness Inducement and when her aura gets activated, every creature in the surrounding vicinity feels an overwhelming sense of sadness.
Blue Diamond's power is incredibly unsettling. Steven Universe fan AstronautSea2050 writes on Reddit that Blue Diamond's power is "very creepy" as she "forces feelings on others" in a bid to either defeat them or help them.
