Press Statement by James B. Foley/Deputy Spokesman December 19, 1997
Passports Not Needed for Travel to Mexico
The Department of State has been receiving queries that as a result of an alleged change in either U.S. or Mexican requirements, U.S. citizens will have to have a passport to enter Mexico. We would like to affirm that these reports are in error, and that the entry requirements for U.S. citizens going to Mexico are unchanged.

To clarify, U.S. citizens entering Mexico must present proof of citizenship (such as a certified copy of a birth certificate), photo ID and proof of sufficient funds. A passport and visa are not required of U.S. citizens entering Mexico for tourism or for transit for stays of up to 90 days.

For information on entry requirements for U.S. citizens traveling to any foreign country, please consult the Bureau of Consular Affairs' booklet, "Foreign Entry Requirements," available on the Internet at http://travel.state.gov or for 50 cents from the Consumer Information Center, Pueblo, Co. 81009.
