Outfits Ensembles Trends Advice

Blazers are fabulous, but wearing a suitable top underneath a blazer can be tricky, especially when tops with bell, fluted and lantern sleeves are all the trendy rage.

Here are 13 types of tops to layer under blazers. Some are ultra feminine, and others read the opposite. You’re generally not after a top that is oversized and chunky unless the blazer is roomy too. In most cases blazers are tailored or a fluid fit, so you’re after a body-con, tailored or fluid fit top. Wear them untucked, semi-tucked or tucked.

The effect of the layering top can be subtle, simple, complicated or bold. It can take on a variety of silhouettes, create a low or high contrast, look tonal, or fably texture-rich. Choose solids, patterns, knits or wovens. Add jewellery, watch and eyewear as desired.

1. Sleeveless Tops

Sleeveless tops, like simple shell tops, are popular with my clients because it’s comfortable and visually less bulky on the sleeves of the blazer. Choose a neckline that lies flat under the blazer, or rests comfortably above the collar.

2. Turtlenecks

High necklines like mock turtlenecks and turtlenecks are a ‘70s Modern Classic under a blazer. The effect is extra polished when the neckline fits tightly and neatly against the neck. Chic. You need a long neck for this combination.

3. Lightweight Pullovers

Pullovers with lower necklines like crew, scoop, boat, slash and V-necklines are fabulous under blazers, creating a streamlined effect. Sleeves can range from short to long. The larger the bust, the more flattering the effect of a lower neckline.

4. Shirts

A stiff and crisp button-down shirt is a masculine and Tomboy option under a blazer, but can look sharp and professional nonetheless. Leave the collar of the shirt open and wear it over the collar of the blazer, and pop the collar if you like. I like to button my shirts and blouses all the way up, and pop the collar. Shirts with neckties work beautifully with the tie tied in a bow or knot.

5. Blouses

A client favourite. Remember that a blouse is NOT a shirt. Blouses are softer and daintier. Blouse styles that you can wear under blazers run the gamut. Basic, pussy bow, empire cut, V-neck and ruffled collar styles with sleek sleeves are a good bet.

10. Crop Tops

There are lots of crop tops at retail at the moment because they work well with the oh-so-trendy higher rises of jeans, shorts and trousers. From cropped tees and blouses to corsets and bustiers — they can all work under a blazer if you’re prepared to showcase some skin.

12. Hoodies

Our third Tomboy option, and adorable if the fit of the hoodie is dead right. It has to be sleek and the neckline of the hoodie should fit quite closely around the neck. Pull-on or zip-through hoodies can work. Pull the hood over the collar of the blazer, and make sure it lies flat.

13. Asymmetrical Tunics

Layering an asymmetrical tunic under a blazer creates a more avant-garde vibe that can be striking. If you’re worried about “chopping up the body” with the excess of horizontal lines, keep the tunic and blazer low contrast to each other. Or keep the tunic and bottoms low contrast to each other. And your third option is to create a tonal column of colour.

You can also wear blazers over dresses and layered tops.

Personally, I layer finer gauge knitwear like crew necks, mock turtlenecks, boat necks and turtlenecks under blazers. I also layer drapey blouses, the occasional button-down shirt, gauzy polo shirt, peplum top and pussy bow shirt. My favourites are simple long-sleeved blouses and turtlenecks in tailored and fluid fits. Some of the blouses I layer are roomier than fluid, but because they drape well, they work under tailored blazers without creating bulk. Because I prefer the fit of my blazers to be on the roomier side of tailored, I can layer a camisole, thermal underwear, and a top with sleeves under them.

Here are the exact tops from my wardrobe that I layer under blazers across the seasons:

YAY. I had been waiting for this exact post.

Some great options here Angie. I usually wear a T-shirt, camisole or sleeveless top under my blazers. I would love to find a waistcoat for a “Le Smoking” Effect!

October 17, 2017 at 5:04 am RobinF Veteran

A lot of great ideas here. I especially love the idea of a peplum top under a blazer.

October 17, 2017 at 5:16 am Diana Veteran

Unless it’s quite cold I usually prefer a sleeveless top (or a small cap sleeve) under most of my blazers because I don’t like the feeling of bunchy sleeves, and I prefer the look of a more fitted blazer sleeve which leaves less room for long sleeves underneath. I also find having to adjust my sleeves every time I take the jacket on and off (which I tend to do multiple times at work since I move between rooms of greatly varying temperatures) very fussy. Of course all bets are off when it’s cold! In that case I find that a thinner long sleeve top + a sweater vest or waistcoat is a good warm option.

I do love the look of the hoodie+ blazer combo though and will sometimes wear it despite the fuss!

October 17, 2017 at 5:29 am Suz (website) Veteran

What a comprehensive run-down! Thanks, Angie!

I wear or have worn almost all of these, though I no longer want to show skin with a crop top and it’s been many years since I’ve layered a blazer over a waistcoat or even a camisole, for that matter. I tend to prefer lightweight knits like merino or silky blouses/ shirts under my blazers, though I will also wear a heavier gauge shirt sometimes or a hoodie, or a tee. I also have a peplum and used to have an asymmetrical sweater that I enjoyed layering under a jacket.

October 17, 2017 at 5:44 am lisa p

Thanks for this! Tons of options and some new ideas. I went straight for that scuba vest (only to find it was over $200 Cdn ) and the jersey sleeveless Gap hoodie. Two really practical solutions for me. I don’t wear sleeved tops under blazers – I find blouses have too much static cling as it is when you take the jacket off – and am always looking for something different than the typical poly or silk sleeveless shell.

I’ll be keeping this list bookmarked !

October 17, 2017 at 5:46 am anchie Veteran

Except for few chunkier casual sweaters, all my tops can layer under a blazer, that is my prerequisite And my favorites are fine gauge knitwear. But I get annoyed with 3/4 sleeve tops that are too short to hold while getting dressed and then they bunch around the elbow. Do you have maybe solution for that?

October 17, 2017 at 5:56 am Janet (website) Veteran

I love the hoodie under a blazer look for casualizing a blazer, but I’m not sure my current blazers will accommodate the bulk of my current hoodies underneath. I’ll have to experiment.

October 17, 2017 at 6:00 am Mirjana Veteran

Great options Angie. I usually wear sleeveless top, T-shirts, shirts, blouse with short sleeves or long sleeves, lightweight pullover, but not turtleneck as I have short neck.

October 17, 2017 at 6:03 am viva Veteran

My favorite neckline under a blazer is a high crewneck, which I suppose means that I have a fairly long neck. I love that Gap sleeveless hoodie (thank you, Lisap for pointing me to it!) – which I just ordered and with coupon codes got for $9! I really love wearing sleeveless tops, graphic tees, or very delicate blouses under blazers because anything thicker can be constricting. I don’t feel like I have large arms but there never seems to be enough room for my arms and a real sweater! I love the idea of that 1970 turtleneck sweater of yours under a sweater, Angie, but I cannot imagine also having room for arms! LOL!

October 17, 2017 at 6:08 am April Veteran

Some nice inspirations here!

I can’t bear the feeling of a blazer over a sleeveless layer (something about the blazer touching a bare underarm is just icky to me) which is too bad since this is the sleekest way to wear a blazer, especially if you have shoulders that often make blazers a bit snug.

I love tee shirts under a blazer and I find that a tee that’s a bit too snug-fitting to wear on its own is often just right beneath a blazer.

October 17, 2017 at 6:09 am Joy

You have given us so many wonderful ideas here. The type of top that I have problems wearing under a blazer is the boatneck. They end up bunching up in the middle on me. Would a tighter fit help?

October 17, 2017 at 6:33 am juecav Active Member

Thank you for this.

I’m vey boring when it comes to what I wear under a blazer, usually a tailored shirt or floaty blouse. I would never have dreamed to have worn a sleeveless top. And yet, now you say it, its as clear as day how it would work. No bulk in the arms. I also like how you have teamed a hoodie too, what a fantastic easy way to wear it. So many ideas. I love reading all your share with us. Thank you.

October 17, 2017 at 7:09 am Angie (website) Fashion Stylist

Glad the post is helpful, ladies. SO many options.

Diana and Viv, I don’t find long sleeves bulky under blazers. I think my blazers are a roomier fit than yours.

Suz, asymmetrical tops can look amazing under blazers. I especially like the tonal effect.

Lisa p, static cling? I’m trying to remember whether that happens to me.

Anchie, a good prerequisite. YES to three quarter sleeves being annoying to layer under a blazer.

Mirjana, you are sorted.

Joy, you need a very snug boat neck – that’s more like a slash neck – to fit neatly under a blazer.

October 17, 2017 at 7:23 am Marilyn Veteran

Nice roundup, Angie!

I can vouch for the CM Archibelle Sweater. I bought it in black last year and it’s been such a workhorse for me I think I might duplicate it. The low mock neck is not at all constricting and the scallops make it extra special. The shorter length is perfect for petites….it’s perfect on me (5′). It’s fantastic both on it’s own and under a blazer. It was in heavy rotation last winter and still looks great. Nice quality.

And it’s such a treat and an education to see the pieces you actually wear, Angie!

Thanks for this, Angie. I was so waiting for this post. There are many options here to choose from. You are a genius.

October 17, 2017 at 7:51 am Suzanne (ambergreen) Veteran

These are nice options for blazer people! I rarely wear one, but I was surprised to see the hoodie option listed, which I do use on rare blazer occasions, and that more YLFers would wear it than I’d have thought. The next option I’d try would be the graphic tee. But it’s almost like hoodies *are* my blazer. I never thought I’d be that person, but–well. It’s probably a PNW thing. I’ll note that mine are of finer fabric and lighter weight for layering than the bulky athletic sweatshirt type–that kind, I use as loungewear only.

October 17, 2017 at 8:14 am approprio (website) Veteran

Ooh yes, it’s blazer season for sure! I was wondering today if I have time to wear them all before it gets too cold again. Or should I just pick one or two? Thanks for the inspiration!

October 17, 2017 at 8:40 am Dianna Veteran

Oh, and I forgot to say, I love your beautiful collection of tops. It’s a delight just to see them together.

October 17, 2017 at 9:10 am The Cat Veteran

Nice options.

Almost all my tops will fit under a blazer. (The exceptions may be party blouses with fluted sleeves or other details that look best when the blouse is worn alone.) And it has been so for decades. This is a deliberate choice, made because I love dressing in layers, wearing blazers and other toppers. My favourite tops to layer under a blazer are pullovers (turtlenecks and crewnecks), shirts and blouses, but I also wear T-shirts and lace camisoles.

October 17, 2017 at 9:13 am Elaine

Another option……. the Veronica Beard Dickey jackets. They’re Great! Looks like you have on a full top, but you don’t have the heaviness of the complete layer. I love them!!

October 17, 2017 at 9:16 am skylurker Veteran

I wear blouses or shirts (long sleeves, collar). For some reason I don’t like collarless stuff (like knits), if I wear a knit for warmth, I wear a shirt underneath. I like the look of turtlenecks but can’t stand the choking feeling – they’re too warm for office wear anyway.

October 17, 2017 at 9:35 am Firecracker (Sharan) Veteran

There is a lot of inspiration here. I’m still not craving a blazer. But IF I DID wear a blazer, I might also have to have that lovely lace peplum top by Joie to wear under it.

October 17, 2017 at 9:50 am kkards Veteran

yes to all these! my favorite top under a blazer is a Tee, with a light merino sweater coming in 2nd cold places, and a dress sleeveless knit for warm places!

October 17, 2017 at 9:57 am Dana (website) Veteran

Perfect! I’ve been thinking of adding a blazer or two to my wardrobe and was just thinking about what I’d wear under. Sometimes I feel like I get into a rut just wearing a T (a boring one,) tank or sleeveless cowl neck under jackets. This gives me some fresh ideas! Thanks!

October 17, 2017 at 10:30 am rachylou Veteran

Wow, that’s a ton of ideas! I want the rainbow bustier, lol. Two questions: don’t péplums get kind of squashed and you don’t think hoodies and a blazer are maybe the one thing that’s ‘so 2000’?

October 17, 2017 at 10:48 am Andrea

Hi Angie, I love all the options that you presented here…my question is what do others do with the long shirts tails in the back…often the shirt tail is longer than the bottom of the jacket or sweater…I have struggled with how to tuck in the back and yet leave the front untucked…what have others done? Help!

I adore blazers, and my favorite tops to wear under them are either sleeveless styles or thin long sleeved tee or mock neck styles. When I go out I’ll wear a fun graphic tee shirt, but not for work.

Two questions for Angie or anyone else who might have the answers. First, I tend to have trouble with v-neck and blazer combined. Sometimes the shape of the v and the stance on the jacket seem to work together and other times it just looks strange on me. I can’t think of a guideline which might be helpful. For example is it better if there is a shallow v and a low jacket stance, or is it better if they are closer together vertically? Also Angie has pictured a colorful button up cardigan of hers which I think she intended it to be worn under blazers. I sometimes have luck with buttoned sweaters under blazers, but I also don’t have any guidance as to what is likely to work versus look strange. Thanks.

October 17, 2017 at 1:31 pm 3style Veteran

Post Script for Joy and others seeking boat neck tops. The Gap maroon and white striped long sleeved t-shirt pictured above on the left is a great boat neck which is made to be snug enough not to bunch up under a blazer and thick enough to not show bra fabrication. It’s body con but in a more sporty than sexy style. I got it in navy and white stripes and am considering getting more if I like how it goes through the washing machine.

October 17, 2017 at 1:42 pm JP Veteran

It happens that I am wearing a sleeveless wrap top under a black blazer with my faux leather biker pants to work. If I get a chance I’ll take a picture. I used to wear shirts and turtlenecks with my suits when I was in sales, but i got tired of the shirts & wanted softer more feminine look, so now I wear blouses, sleeveless top, etc. And, although I still love turtlenecks but it’s too hot for me

incredible – it’s like you read my mind. I love blazers, keep buying more because I think, “I don’t wear blazers; clearly I need some.” And then I realise I already have plenty ofblazers, but just have no idea how to wear them. Can’t wait to try out some of these combinations. Yay! Such a wonderful explanation; thank you.

Another suggestion….Veronica Beard dickey jackets ! Zip in and out faux tops make for less bulky layered look. I love them!

Marilyn, thanks for the CM sweater validation. I have my eye on both colours.

Mary and Dianna, thanks for the kind words.

The Cat, a practical solution.

Skylurker, T-necks are perfect for office wear when you are me. *smiling*

Dana, it’s fun to refresh what we layer under blazers.

Suzanne, a hoodie can never substitute a blazer!

Rachy, peplums handle surprisingly well under blazers, actually. YES. Hoodies under blazers are very 2000’s look.

3Style, a higher V-neck tends to look best to my eye. My cardi is part of a twinset that I layer under a blazer. You can also button-up a cardigan to look like a pullover and layer it under a blazer. It’s like ONE top. Thanks for the validation on the Gap boat neck.

Mac, you crack me up.

Pullovers and t-shirts are my go to’s for layering under blazers. A vest is fun idea!

Appreciate seeing the great examples and your suggestions, Angie. I tend to wear thin knits. and soft, fluid blouses with a blazer. I have avoided collars and full buttons underneath for quite awhile. Perhaps a lazy work-around for dueling collars and fasteners, that also jives with my non-office lifestyle. Will refer to this post going forward. Beautiful pieces!

Interesting and practical ideas. I prefer collarless tops because I am never quite sure what to do with the shirt collar, but am game to try all of these.

What a great list of ideas and choices. If only I had a blazer. A project for 2018!

Turtlenecks and lightweight pullovers are my favorite styles to wear under a blazer, with turtlenecks being my absolute fav. I wear blazers over dresses, too. Your post has so many delicious ideas to consider. I am a bit smitten with the idea of wearing an asymmetrical top under a blazer. Thank you for the inspiration!

Great post. I’ve given up on 3/4 sleeves, as I love blazers and have never solved the problem mentioned above. Some of my darker, plainer blazers are a bit dull, and even a bright top makes no difference to the side and back views which can look far too formal, especially with dark trousers…. I tried the hoodie solution recently, which is great (I have various bright coloured ones) as the hood of course shows from the back as well! For situations where smart hoodie is inappropriate (not too many these days) then a soft scarf can have the same effect.

So Angie, where are your crop tops? I will happily wear all of these, but the crop top is one style that I will happily leave to my younger self! I remember wearing this style on my honeymoon about 20 years ago. Gorgeous on those who are brave enough.
