19-Year John Cena Streak Could Be Broken This Year - TJR Wrestling

An incredible 19-year-long streak involving John Cena looks set to end this year.
John Cena made his main roster debut back in 2002 on the June 27th episode of SmackDown. In one of the most pivotal moments in the history of the blue brand, Cena answered Kurt Angle’s open challenge, declaring he would beat him with “Ruthless Aggression.”
While he impressed fans and fellow stars with his showing, Cena was defeated by the Olympic Gold Medallist.
Over the following years, the star began gaining momentum in the company and captured his first of many titles in 2004 at WrestleMania 20 by defeating the Big Show to win the United States Championship. Only a year later, at WrestleMania 21, he reached the top of the company by defeating JBL to win the WWE Championship.
This began one of the most dominant careers ever seen in WWE as John Cena went on to win 15 more World Championships as well as an array of other accolades as the face of the company.
In recent years, Cena has followed in the footsteps of The Rock in leaving the wrestling world for Hollywood. However, he has continued to take part in matches, most recently falling short in his attempt to end Roman Reigns’ record-breaking reign as the Universal Champion SummerSlam in 2021.
In fact, until now, John Cena has competed in at least one match every year since his 2002 debut back in the summer of 2002. However, this streak could be coming to an end very soon. Unless he makes a surprise return to the ring in the final months of 2022, it will be the first calendar year he hasn’t taken part in a match since that first match with Kurt Angle.
