Purple represents wisdom, royalty, peace, mystery, magic, creativity, loyalty, and ambition, and if we can't be purple, we can at least use it in our homes. Not to mention, purple meets at the intersection of peaceful, calming blue and bold, passionate red for a beautiful blend. While it may not be the most obvious or popular color in the rainbow when it comes to decorating, it is easily the most interesting. But what colors complement purple best? Since decorators know how to incorporate it better than anyone, we rounded up our favorite designer rooms featuring various shades of purple as examples to follow. Keep reading to discover which colors go best with purple to inspire your own interiors.
1Black + Dark Gray-Purple

In this contemporary sitting room designed by Shapeless Studio, the deep mauve walls set an intimate mood. The inky-black accents and charcoal sofa deepen that vibe, while the lighter pink and cream elements soften things up just enough.
2Gray + Bright Blue + Royal Purple

This dining room designed by Anne Hepfner is full of delightful surprises. The grayscale cloud motif wallpaper asserts a whimsical charm while the marbled blue tablecloth introduces modern vibrance. The purple fabric over the chair cushions adds just enough contrast.

In this chic, swanky kitchen nook by Kingston Lafferty Design, the mosaic of colorful handmade tiles extends overhead. This makes the niche pop, not disappear into the corner. And the gray chalk paint brings in a smoky sophistication, complementing the gold accents and plum paint.

Fresh purple flowers in a stylish amethyst vase brighten up the pale dusty rose walls, mauve bedding, and grassy green accents in this lovely bedroom designed by Kevin Isbell.
5Baby Blue + Grape

Heather Hilliard gave the more traditional elements in this hallway—like the elaborate gilt mirror and oak console—a playful counterpoint with sky-blue grass-cloth wallpaper and a ginger jar table lamp with a grape-toned pleated shade. The pretty purple lilac blossoms are a nice touch too.

Not only is the deep blue paint a lovely and bold color for this living room by Kate Reid, but its high-gloss finish also adds some extra punch. And she doesn't stop there: The marigold curtains and rich orchid armchair contribute to the jewel-toned palette too.

This subtle yet bold bathroom designed by Heidi Caillier is master class in decorating with tiles (and decorating with purple!).
8Royal Blue + Magenta + Plum

This dining room by Redmond Aldrich Design is a sublime blend of modern and traditional thanks to the multi-size paper pendants and elaborate turn-of-the-century ceiling. We adore the bursts of purple balanced by the rich yellows in the carpet and the vibrant blue dining chairs.

Color Theory 101: Opposites attract. This whimsical, pattern-packed living room by Anna Spiro Design is all the proof we need. The energizing orange sofa warms up the soft lavender throughout, creating the perfect visual balance.

The flecks of purple in this panel of gold wallpaper are accentuated by the baby-pink ceiling and lavender carafe and tumbler set. Interior design firm Redmond Aldrich then introduced some contemporary style with spiky modern vases and a clean-lined wooden cabinet.
11Dusty Rose + Lilac

A wavy, rounded iris area rug is further emboldened by a corresponding painting with pops of red in this living room by 2LG Studio. The soft, dusty-pink painted walls assert a sophisticated backdrop without disrupting the overall sweetness of the space.

This bathroom designed by Studio DB has a sexy allure, which is achieved by matching an eggplant-purple bathtub with a metallic wallpaper panel that features a sleek panther and is flanked by forest green–painted walls.

Concrete gets a lot of flack for making a space feel cold rather than homey, while purple and red together have an unfair reputation for resembling a garish Valentine's Day card. But leave it to designer Briony Fitzgerald to prove all the nonbelievers wrong. Vibrant abstract art paired with a traditional console table results in a unique, beautiful blend of old and new, moody and cheerful.
14Cantaloupe + Lavender

Swirling lavender motifs make this kitchen, designed by Erin Martin, romantic and more than a touch theatrical, while the warm Creamsicle orange background is in keeping with the farmhouse bones of the space.

This lavender oasis designed by Cathy Chapman presents a strong case for monochromatic purple decorating. The key: Stick to a color story of muted pastels and use just the right neutral—in this case, light gray.

Interior designer Nicole Dohmen refers to this room as “the Glass House,” due to the expansive windows (it was used as a greenhouse in the home’s earlier years). The window treatments reflect the room's main colors: pink for the Roman shades to reflect the table and purple curtains to reflect the wall paint.
17Dark Brown + Mulberry

The deep chocolate brown–purple hues in this study designed by Studio DB ensure a sense of intimacy and a suggestion of drama while still being timeless. The cooler blues in the painting bring in just a splash of contrast too.

This room designed by Atelier ND is exploding with fun colors. The objective was to use a pretty floral wallpaper, but to dress it down with items that made it look bold and modern rather than precious and dainty. The electric orange blinds, dark green carpet, yellow side table, and purple plaid bedspread bring an edgy Midcentury feel that gets the job done.

Designed by Katherine M. Ireland, these twin beds are topped with pastel purple-and-green canopies for a springlike touch. The canopy toppers offer a slight contrast in print but keep the Easter egg color story consistent. The more prominent hue, pastel yellow, goes so nicely with the purples throughout.
20Turquoise + Red + Bright Purple

A statement wall or ceiling in a fun shade like amethyst is a great way to keep things fresh and interesting. We're loving how this ceiling contrasts with the rustic turquoise pieces and classic red barrel chairs in this cozy nook.
