Managing a baby's laundry is no easy task, and that includes folding onesies. While different kinds of baby clothes offer their own unique folding challenges, onesies can be especially hard to fold in a neat way. The main choices you have are folding the onesies into a small rectangle or rolling them up. These options will make it much easier for you to store your baby's clothes.
Steps
Method 1 Method 1 of 3:Folding Onesies by Hand
-
1 Put all of the onesies into a pile. Whether you're at work or at home, organization is the key to getting things done efficiently. Before you start the folding process, make sure you have all of your onesies in one place. This will make it easier for you to fold more items in a shorter amount of time.[1] - If you sort and fold your wash by color, you might have fewer onesies to fold at a time.
-
2 Place the onesie backside up on a flat surface. Because you'll be storing the onesie in a face-up position, you're going to be folding the garment from the backside up. Make sure that the onesie is smoothed out and laying as flatly as possible before continuing. - If the onesie seems wrinkly, you can make it look smoother without having to use an iron.
-
3 Fold the sleeves into the back of the onesie. Since you're working in reverse, you will want to tuck in the sleeves so that they are laying on the back of the onesie. This applies more to long sleeved onesies. - If the sleeves are short, they may not take up much space.
-
4 Fold the onesie in half horizontally. Once the sleeves are in place, you want to fold the onesie horizontally so that the bottom of the onesie is in line with the top. Once completed, the onesie should be a small, rectangular shape.[2] - If needed, you can fold the onesie horizontally (or vertically) again so that it takes up less space.[3]
- Store the onesies once you have finished folding them.
Rolling the Onesie
-
1 Put the onesie on a flat surface. Since a onesie does not take up that much space, you can fold it just about anywhere. If there's no room for you to fold in your laundry room, consider using an ironing board or countertop.[4] - This will help ensure that the onesie isn't lumpy while you're folding it.
-
2 Place the sleeves on top of the onesie. Before doing any actual folding, you'll want to make the onesie as compact as possible. Fold in the sleeves so that they're laying on top of the garment. - Your goal is to make the onesie look rectangular.[5]
-
3 Fold the onesie in half vertically. Instead of bringing the bottom of the onesie to the top, you should ensure that the sides are touching. Having the onesie be as long and as thin as possible will simplify the rolling process.[6] - The smaller and thinner you fold the onesie, the smaller it will be in its rolled up form.[7]
-
4 Roll the onesie from top to bottom. Use both hands to roll the onesie from top to bottom. Ideally, you'll want the onesie to be the same shape as a Swiss roll. Once you have finished rolling it, the onesie will be much easier to store.[8] Advertisement
Using a Folding Board
-
1 Lay the folding board on a flat surface. Once you have picked a place to fold your laundry, make sure that the onesie is flat and smooth on the folding surface. An ironing board or folding table is a great place to portably fold clothes.[9] You can also use the top of your laundry machine, depending on the model. [10] - You can easily purchase a folding board from an online marketplace (i.e, eBay).[11]
- If you don't have a folding board on hand, you can make one out of cardboard and duct tape. Take six equally sized pieces of cardboard and tape them together across the middle. This will emulate the same actions as a folding board.[12]
-
2 Set the onesie face down in the center of the board. Since onesies are small, it might not take up a lot of space on the folding board. Make sure that the onesie is centered, or else it may look lopsided once you have folded it.[13] -
3 Fold the sleeves in a crossed position. Take the sleeves and fold them into the center of the onesie.[14] If you are folding a short sleeved onesie, you likely won't have very much to fold inwards. Having the sleeves tucked in will make the finished fold look smoother and less sloppy. -
4 Lift the right flap into a perpendicular position. Using one hand, lift the right plastic flap of the folding board upwards. Your goal is to make this flap perpendicular to the rest of the board, so that part of the onesie will fold into the center. This should be a quick motion.[15] - When held upright, your folding flap should look like a right angle.[16]
-
5 Do the same with the left flap. Once you have placed the right folding flap back on a flat surface, use one hand to repeat the same motion with the left folding flap. Using a quick motion, move the left folding flap into an upright, perpendicular position before bringing it back down to a flat surface.[17] - This process should only take 1-2 seconds.[18]
-
6 Push the bottom flap upwards. Once you have used both folding flaps, the onesie should look like a small rectangle. Use one hand to push the bottom flap of the folding board into a perpendicular position before bringing it back down to the flat surface. Like the side flaps, this should only take a couple of seconds.[19] - 7 Flip over the folded onesie and set it aside. Once you have set down the bottom folding flap, use both hands to lift up your folded onesie and flip it over. You are now ready to store the garment. Advertisement
