Flower wreaths are the perfect decorations for all seasons. They can also be used to mark special occasions and holidays, such as weddings, anniversaries, funerals, Christmas, or Easter. Making your own wreath is almost always cheaper than buying a wreath. You can make a fresh flower wreath, or a wreath made of artificial or dried flowers.

Steps

Method 1 Method 1 of 3:

Making a Fresh Flower Wreath

  1. Step 1 Buy fresh flowers. 1 Buy fresh flowers. You will need to buy flowers right before you plan on making a wreath. If you buy flowers too long before making a wreath, there is a chance they will wither and die. You can buy flowers from your local supermarket or florist. Some flowers you can choose from are roses, poppies, carnations, chrysanthemums, lilies, and orchids.
    • You can combine several flowers to make a more visually interesting wreath. Choose flowers with colors that complement each other. For example, yellow tulips pair well with verbena or lavender. You can also choose flowers of different sizes and shapes, like bundles of baby’s-breath with roses.
  2. Step 2 Obtain floral wire. 2 Obtain floral wire. You can buy floral wire at a craft store, like Michaels or Hobby Lobby. The wire will hold more flowers the thicker it is. A 18-gauge is the minimum you should buy. It will support heavy buds, like roses. 22-26-Gauge is an all purpose wire that will support whatever type of flowers you are using.[1]
    • Thinner wire is more malleable and a better choice for an intricate setting.
    • You can choose between green stub, paper covered, and enameled wire.

  3. Step 3 Make the base of the wreath. 3 Make the base of the wreath. Double a length of floral wire. Wrap the ends around what you want to be the top of your wreath form, twining the ends back around the wire to secure it. It should create a circular shape. Twine the ends to form a loop. You'll use the loop at the top for hanging the wreath.[2]
    • Size your wreath to take up about half the width of the door or wall you intend to hang it on.
    • Make sure the hanging loop sticks up from the back of the wreath where it'll be less visible, instead of the front.
  4. Step 4 Make bundles of flowers. 4 Make bundles of flowers. Create small bundles of flowers by wrapping the stems with flexible wire attached to a floral pick (a small wooden stake). You can also bundle flower stems together with floral wire. The upper limit for your bundle size is the width of the wreath form. How small you make your bundles, and how you shape them, depends to a large degree on your wreath size and the textures and size of your materials.[3]
    • Group together several types of flowers in a bundle to create variety in the wreath.
  5. Step 5 Place the bundles around the wreath. 5 Place the bundles around the wreath. Lay your floral bundles out on the wreath form so you get a general idea of the proper positioning. Do not use any glue or form of attachment yet. Now is the time to make any major design changes or tweaks. Leave a few flowers or bundles out just in case you want to go back and fill in space.[4]
    • It’s okay if you don’t remember exactly where the bundles went or they move slightly. You just want to get a general idea of how you want to design the wreath.
  6. Step 6 Attach the bundles. 6 Attach the bundles. Attach your floral bundles to the homemade flower wreath using hot or white glue. Apply glue to the foam wreath form, then press the floral bundles into place. Work "backwards" around the wreath, laying each new bundle of flowers over the exposed stems of the previous bunch, with each bunch overlapping by about half.[5]
    • If you're creating a wide wreath work from the outside in, filling in the entire width of the wreath from outside to center before you move further around the ring.
    • You must leave the wreath flat until the glue is completely dry.
  7. Step 7 Add extra embellishments. 7 Add extra embellishments. If you would like to add extra embellishment to the wreath, add decoration embellishments using the same techniques using glue, pins, or floral picks. You can add berries, leaves, fern, and bows. Consider the type of wreath you are making when adding decorations.[6]
    • Pastel bows work well with an Easter wreath.
    • Red berries look great with Christmas wreaths.
    • Only use glue to attach the flowers/stems/greenery directly to the wreath form. If none of your wreath form still shows and you still want to add embellishments, you'll need to use floral picks or pins.

Method 2 Method 2 of 3:

Using a Foam Base for Fresh Flowers

  1. Step 1 Buy a foam base. 1 Buy a foam base. Keep fresh flower wreaths fresher longer by using a foam base and soaking it in water. You can buy a foam base from a craft store, like Hobby Lobby, depending on your location. Choose a foam base that is about the size you would like your wreath to be.
    • Keep in mind that the wreath will appear larger once the flowers are on it.
  2. Step 2 Soak the foam in water. 2 Soak the foam in water. Fill a basin, like your kitchen sink, with water. The basin should be at least the same thickness as the foam base you are using. About a gallon of water should be enough. Place the base in the water. The base will start to sink as it fills with water. Allow it to sit in the water for one or two minutes. Then, take the foam base out of the water, allow the excess water to fall off, and pat it gently with a towel.
    • If using the kitchen sink as your basis, make sure to clean it thoroughly with soap and water first.
  3. Step 3 Attach the flowers. 3 Attach the flowers. Put the stems into the foam base while it is still wet. You will need to stick the stems of the flowers into the foam base so they will soak up water. You can either stick the individual flowers directly in the foam, or wire them first. Wiring them first will make for a tighter hold. To wire them, wrap floral wire around a bundle of stems. Then, put the stems into the foam.
    • It may take some effort to insert the flowers into the foam. Don’t use too much force, or you could break the foam.
  4. Step 4 Fill in the wreath. 4 Fill in the wreath. Continue attaching flowers until the wreath is mostly filled. There is no correct design. Fill it in however pleases the eye. You can plan it beforehand before you attach them if you have a specific idea. Tuck in extra flowers, leaves, or other embellishments to complete the wreath.
    • You can use pins or glue to secure flowers if you are having trouble making them stay in position.
    • Spritz with water daily to keep the flowers alive longer, or allow them to dry naturally.

Method 3 Method 3 of 3:

Putting Together an Artificial Flower Wreath

  1. Step 1 Buy artificial flowers. 1 Buy artificial flowers. Artificial flower wreaths last much longer than fresh flower leaves. You can keep artificial wreaths for several years if you take care of them properly. Artificial flowers can be bought at most craft stores. There are several types of artificial flowers to choose form. You can buy silk, fabric, wax, latex, and foam flowers.
    • If you don’t want to use artificial flowers, you can also buy preserved flowers. They can last as long as artificial flowers if taken care of properly.
  2. Step 2 Buy a foam base. 2 Buy a foam base. You can purchase a ready-to-use foam base from a craft store. Choose one that looks close to the size you desire the wreathe to be. Remember, that is will appear a bit larger once the wreath is completed.[7]
    • Measure the base or look for the dimensions on the price sticker while still in the store to make sure it is the size you are looking for.
  3. Step 3 Wire the flowers if necessary. 3 Wire the flowers if necessary. If you are using artificial flowers without stems, you can make stems with floral tape and wire. Add a piece of flower wire to the bottom of the flower and attach it with tape. Tape the entire length of the wire to create a stem.[8]
    • You can multiply how many flowers you have by taking apart an artificial bouquet and creating stems for each flower.
    • It is easier to buy artificial flowers that already have stems attached.
  4. Step 4 Arrange the flowers. 4 Arrange the flowers. Place single flower heads or bundles of flowers around the wreath to form the design. Check that you find it pleasing before attaching the flowers permanently. You can remove the design completely before attaching, or keep the design in place as you begin attaching them to the base.[9]
    • If attaching single flowers, go through one type of flower at a time. For example, attach all of the roses first. Then, move on to the lilies.
  5. Step 5 Attach the flowers. 5 Attach the flowers. You can insert the flower stems directly into the foam base. Or, you can glue the flowers to the base. Use hot or white glue to attach the flowers all the way around the wreath. Floral pins can also help to keep flowers in place. [10]
    • Hot glue works better than white glue for a longer lasting attachment. [11]
  6. Step 6 Attach a hanger. 6 Attach a hanger. You can make your own hanger by cutting off the top of a wire clothes hanger, gluing it on the back of the wreath, and hanging it on a nail. You can also purchase wreath hangers from a florist or craft store. Hang the wreath on the door, wall, or wherever it will appear decorative for the occasion.[12]
    • You can buy hangers in plastic, wire, and as suction cups.[13]
