Removing an oven door makes it a lot easier to reach inside of your oven while you’re cleaning, and it’s super easy to do (no tools required!). No matter what oven brand you have, the doors can be taken off in similar ways —it just depends if there are latches holding them in place. Keep reading, and we’ll walk you through how to take the oven door off and put it back on when you’re finished cleaning.

How to Take an Oven Door Off

Start by opening your oven door and undoing the latches on the door hinges if your model has them. Then, close your door ¾ of the way and hold its sides. Lift the door straight up and off the hinges to remove it.

Steps

Method 1 Method 1 of 3:

How to Remove an Oven Door with Latches

  1. Step 1 Open the oven door. 1 Open the oven door. Bring the oven door all the way down, and let it hang open at its lowest point. No matter what brand of oven you have, opening the door exposes the metal hinges connecting the door to the rest of the oven and the latches locking the hinges in place.[1]
  2. Step 2 Flip the latches on the bottom of the door to unlock the hinges. 2 Flip the latches on the bottom of the door to unlock the hinges. Locate the latches on the sides of the door positioned right on the hinges, which look like small metal arms on the inner part of the door. Look for a small movable metal piece on each hinge. Move each hinge down by hand as far as it will go.[2]
    • Homer Flores, an appliance repair technician, explains that hinge latches and locations can vary by model, so check the specifications from the manufacturer. He also warns that the hinges could be under high tension, so work slowly and carefully.[3]
    • If the latches are in a down position when you open the door, then flip the latch up to unlock it.
    • If the latch is stuck, then try pushing it open with the end of a flathead screwdriver.

  3. Step 3 Close the door until it is ¼ of the way open. 3 Close the door until it is ¼ of the way open. Position your hands evenly on either side of the door. This helps you keep the door steady and lift it in the next step. Before lifting it, raise the door steadily, leaving it partially open. Flores recommends opening the door so it “stops on its own in the 50- to 70-degree position.[4]
    • You may need to leave the door open a little more in some models. Usually you can remove the door when it is up to ⅓ of the way open.
  4. Step 4 Lift and pull the door up to remove it. 4 Lift and pull the door up to remove it. Keep your hands in position on the door’s sides. Lift both sides evenly until the door clears the hinges. Then, pull the door towards you so you can move it away from the oven.[5]
    • You may need to wiggle the door from side to side a little in order to get it off the hinges.
  5. Step 5 Set the door down on a flat surface. 5 Set the door down on a flat surface. The door might feel a little heavy, so put it down and give yourself a rest. Place it with the handle side down in a clean spot where it won’t be damaged, especially if your door has glass.
    • Lay a blanket or towel on the floor to protect the door from scratches.

  1. Step 1 Open the door about ¼ of the way. 1 Open the door about ¼ of the way. Grasp the handle and open the door slightly by about 4 in (10 cm). Keep your grip on the door in case the door doesn’t stop on its own in this position.[6]
    • Some oven doors may stay still when partially opened. For this type of door, open it until it can stay open on its own, which will be about ¼ of the way down.
  2. Step 2 Grasp the door evenly by its sides. 2 Grasp the door evenly by its sides. Move your hands to the door’s sides. If your door is the kind that can slam shut on you, maintain your grip on the handle until you can firmly fold it on one side.
    • Keep your hands positioned at the same height on each of the door’s sides. This helps you lift the door smoothly so both hinges come loose at the same time.
  3. Step 3 Lift the door away from the oven to remove it. 3 Lift the door away from the oven to remove it. Pull the door back from the oven while simultaneously lifting it. The hinges will slide free from the oven’s frame, so keep a firm grasp on the door.[7]
    • As long as you pull the door straight back at an angle, the hinges will clear the oven’s frame.
    • If the door gets stuck or doesn’t move, then there may be latches on the hinges that you need to undo first.
  4. Step 4 Set the door down in a safe location. 4 Set the door down in a safe location. Place the outer, handle side down on a flat surface. Try to choose a clean, soft location for the door where it won’t be knocked over or damaged.
    • Lay a blanket, towel, or other soft material down on a clean spot first for extra protection.

Replacing the Oven Door

PDF download Download Article
  1. Step 1 Grasp the door by the sides. 1 Grasp the door by the sides. Replacing the door is similar to taking the door off, except in reverse. To begin, lift the door and position your hands about ¼ of the way down from the top. This will give you plenty of space to maneuver the hinges onto the oven frame.[8]
    • Make sure you have a firm, even grip on the door. You will need to fit both sides into the oven’s slots at the same time.
  2. Step 2 Lift the door to align it with the hinge slots. 2 Lift the door to align it with the hinge slots. To fit the door properly, slide it into position at the same angle it was when you removed it. Most of the time, you will need to hold the door vertically, about 4 in (10 cm) away from the oven. The hinges at the bottom of the door should be near the slots on the oven.[9]
    • Ovens vary, so your latch or hinge system may be a little different depending on the manufacturer. You may need to hold the door at a lower angle to align it with the hinge slots.
  3. Step 3 Slide the hinges into the oven’s hinge slots. 3 Slide the hinges into the oven’s hinge slots. Push the door’s metal hinge arms as far as they can go into the slots. Make sure the hinge arms go in evenly and at the same time, or else you may end up with a crooked door. The hinges should pass completely into the slots.
    • If the door looks uneven, slide the door back out of the slots and try reinserting it.
  4. Step 4 Push the door down and attempt to open it. 4 Push the door down and attempt to open it. Push down on the door’s corners. This should ensure that the door stays on the hinges. Now pull the door open. If the door was placed correctly, it will swing open without difficulty.
    • If the door opens partially, it isn’t positioned correctly. Remove the door, and then slide it back into the hinge slots.
  5. Step 5 Lock the hinge latches if your door has them. 5 Lock the hinge latches if your door has them. Locate the tiny latches on the sides of the door’s hinges. To lock the hinges, all you have to do is pull the latches up by hand until they rest against the door’s frame. Then, you can open and close your oven door like normal again
    • Depending on your oven, the latches may need to be pushed down to rest against the oven door instead of pulled up.

  • Question How do you manually unlock an oven door? Drew Hawkins1 Drew Hawkins1 Community Answer If you're trying to unlock the hinges on your oven's door, start by opening it all of the way down to expose them. Locate the small latches on the metal hinges. They should be positioned right on the hinges, which look like arms on the inner part of the door. Move each of the hinges down as far as they'll go with your hands to unlock them. Keep in mind that latches can vary from oven to oven. For instance, if the latches are in a down position when you open the door, you may need to flip them up to unlock it. If a latch is really stuck, try gently prying it with a flathead screwdriver. Once the latches are unlocked, it'll be much easier to remove the door from your oven. Thanks! We're glad this was helpful. Thank you for your feedback. • Question How do I put oven door back on? Drew Hawkins1 Drew Hawkins1 Community Answer It's actually much more simple than you may think, so don't worry! Pick up the door and hold it firmly by both sides. Hold the door vertically, about 4 in (10 cm) away from the oven so the hinges at the bottom of the door are near the slots on the oven. Then, push the door's metal hinge arms as far as they go into the slots. Slide them in evenly and at the same time or the door may go in crooked. Push down on the door's corners to make sure it's all the way on and then try opening the door to test it. If it doesn't open properly you can fix it by removing the door, and then sliding it back into the hinge slots. Once the door is back on the oven, find the tiny latches on the sides of the hinges and pull them up to lock them into place. That's all there is to it! Thanks! We're glad this was helpful.
