Always donning his face-covering mask, the purpose of which is still unknown to fans, the secret that is the lower-half of his head was explored way back in episode 101, when Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura decided that they must figure out what their teacher’s face really looked like under that mask.

Some of Naruto’s theories were that he was secretly ugly under, suggesting that he perhaps had cod roe lips or buck teeth.

Despite Team 7’s hilarious efforts throughout that episode, all that Kakashi reveals is that under his mask is… ANOTHER MASK.

With a collective sigh, Kakashi fans had all but given up on seeing what was under his mask. However, fans were pleasantly surprised last week when a filler episode aired for Naruto Shippuden that brought the mystery to an end!

WARNING: SPOILER COUNTRY AHEAD!

Episode 469 (that’s right: 368 episodes between the first mention of it and the actual reveal!) shows Naruto ever curious about seeing Kakashi’s face. Although Sakura and Sasuke dismiss the idea as played out, an unfamiliar ninja by the name of Sukae shows up to suggest searching the ninja registration records for a photo of Kakashi’s full face. Sukae says he’ll help them, in return for the big scoop he’ll get if he’s able to publish it in the media.

They manage to break into the secret document storage area, and are about to reveal the photo of Kakashi, when they are discovered by the ANBU security guards and are forced to admit defeat.

As a backup plan, Sukae suggests trying to photograph Kakashi as he’s about to eat. Predictably, this goes awry when they take a look at the photos, and it shows only a bird flying in the way, followed by Kiba’s dog Akamaru leaping across Kakashi’s face moments later.

Sasuke laments, “I feel like some kind of divine force is at work here.”

In a last ditch attempt, Team 7 gathers the rest of their ninja-in-training friends to join them in an elaborate scheme involving everyone’s ninja abilities. Predictably, this also fails, as it’s revealed that Kakashi was impersonating photographer Sukae all along, messing with his students in order to help them bond.

Although Naruto and his friends don’t get to see Kakashi’s face, fans get to see the full glory of his bishounen looks as he removes his disguise. I mean, of course he’s going to be pretty, right? It looks like his scar does go down all the way onto his cheek, and he also sports a mole on his chin.

We even get a little bonus scene where Kakashi is in his full ninja garb and about to put his mask back on.

Naruto author Masashi Kishimoto, had only once briefly revealed Kakashi’s face in the form of a manga sketch that was included in a booklet given away at the Naruto art exhibition held in Japan last April.
