What to Know Before Getting Cash Back

Before getting cash back, you should be aware that the process varies depending on which payment method you’re using.

I explain how to get cash back with a debit card, credit card, or personal check below.

With a Debit Card

You can charge your debit card for both the purchase amount and cash back amount in the same transaction.[4]

Follow these steps to get cash back with your debit card:[4]

• Swipe or insert your card as usual, choosing “Debit” or “PIN Entry” for your payment type.
• Select “Yes” for cash back and select the amount you want.
• Enter your pin and confirm your purchase. The cashier or self-checkout register will give you your receipt and the cash back.

With a Credit Card

Generally, you cannot get cash back at the register with a credit card. However, Discover does allow some cash back transactions.[5][6]

Where retailers allow it, you can use your Discover card at checkout and choose how much cash you want to get back, just as you would with a debit card.[5]

Note that you can only get $120 cash back in 24 hours with a Discover card.[5]

With a Personal Check

To get cash back when paying with a check, you’ll need to request it from the cashier directly.[7]
