What to Know Before Getting Cash Back
Before getting cash back, you should be aware that the process varies depending on which payment method you’re using.
I explain how to get cash back with a debit card, credit card, or personal check below.
With a Debit Card
You can charge your debit card for both the purchase amount and cash back amount in the same transaction.[4]
Follow these steps to get cash back with your debit card:[4]
- Swipe or insert your card as usual, choosing “Debit” or “PIN Entry” for your payment type.
- Select “Yes” for cash back and select the amount you want.
- Enter your pin and confirm your purchase. The cashier or self-checkout register will give you your receipt and the cash back.
With a Credit Card
Generally, you cannot get cash back at the register with a credit card. However, Discover does allow some cash back transactions.[5][6]
Where retailers allow it, you can use your Discover card at checkout and choose how much cash you want to get back, just as you would with a debit card.[5]
Note that you can only get $120 cash back in 24 hours with a Discover card.[5]
With a Personal Check
To get cash back when paying with a check, you’ll need to request it from the cashier directly.[7]
If you’re able to get cash back in the amount you want, you should make the check out for the total price of your purchase plus the amount of the cash back. For example, if your groceries cost $40 and you want $20 cash back, write your check for $60.[7]
If you’re specifically looking for places that accept this payment method, see where to get cash back on personal checks.

FAQ
Will my bank charge a fee when I get cash back?Usually, your bank won’t charge a fee, but some banks and credit unions charge fees for all PIN-based transactions;[66] you can find the fees that apply to you in your account agreement or by contacting your bank.
Does cash back show up on my bank statement? This depends on how the merchant processes payment. However, cash back will not typically show up as a separate transaction. Most businesses process your purchase and cash back as one single transaction.[67][67]
What’s the main difference between getting cash back with a debit card and a personal check? Many stores have a lower limit for cash back from a check than from a debit card transaction, if they accept checks at all. This is due to the increased risk of fraud with check transactions.[7]
In Summary
You can get cash back at several convenience stores, grocery stores, pharmacies, superstores, and more.
Generally, stores offer this service for debit card transactions; some also allow cash back when paying with a credit card or personal check.
