What to Look for When Buying a Lion’s Mane Supplement

Be informed! Do your homework before buying any Lion’s Mane product. Thankfully, reputable companies usually do most of the work for you. Look for brands (ahem, like this one) that are excited to share information about the quality and purity of their products. Here’s a list to reference any time you want to buy a Lion’s Mane product:

Is this Lion’s Mane product Certified Organic?

Mushrooms, like the vegetables you buy at the store or the milk in your fridge, can be Certified Organic. Not all Lion’s Mane tinctures are USDA Certified Organic, but ours are. To maintain this certification, everything we use must also be organic, from our substrates (the material on which mushrooms are grown) to our cleaning supplies. Every product we sell and every ingredient we use gets assigned a batch number and can be traced.

What parts of the mushroom are in the Lion’s Mane product?

Fruiting bodies are the above-ground parts of a mushroom. These are the parts you might recognize at the supermarket and the parts you usually forage, cook and extract. When it comes to Lion’s Mane, the fruiting body is the fluffy white part. Mycelium is a part of the mushroom that we usually don’t see, because it’s hidden underground. While important to the mushroom, mycelium is not traditionally used to support your health.* However, it’s cheaper and easier to grow mycelium on grain than it is fruiting bodies, so many products use Lion’s Mane mycelium. Our products use only 100% Lion’s Mane fruiting bodies, never mycelium. Lion’s Mane is one of our favorite mushrooms — they’re even on the list of the 10 best ones for your health!*

How is the Lion's Mane extracted?

Mushrooms contain a wide variety of active components, and they need to be extracted for your body to access them. We always double extract our Lion’s Mane. The active compounds in mushrooms are both alcohol-soluble (triterpenes) and water-soluble (beta-glucans). To get full-spectrum support from mushrooms, we extract ours with 190-proof alcohol and hot water, then carefully combine the two. We follow the science and extract our Lion’s Mane (and all mushrooms we use) at the optimal alcohol percentages, temperatures and durations.

Has this Lion’s Mane tincture been tested?

Before you buy, check to make sure your Lion’s Mane tincture has been tested to be pure and potent. Every batch of Lion’s Mane we use goes through lab testing. We test for heavy metals and biological contamination, to ensure the purity of our products. We also check the concentration of active compounds.
