4 Turkey Preparation Pointers - Woman's Day

Before you slide your bird in the oven, take the time to clean, tuck and tie it. Not only will it make the turkey look more attractive, but it'll also help it cook evenly. Follow this step-by-step guide to get it right.

1. Remove anything that is in the turkey cavity (package of giblets, neck, etc.) and set it aside. Place the turkey, breast-side up, on a rimmed baking sheet to catch any juices that may leach out.

2. Working with one wing at a time, lift up that side of the turkey and fold and tuck the wing underneath the turkey's back; repeat on the other side. Tucking the wings will keep them from burning.

3. Cut a 6-in. piece of kitchen twine or thread. Cross the turkey legs together. Tie them together directly above the bottom joint. This makes for a tidy-looking bird. (If you're stuffing your turkey, make sure to do so before you tie it.)

4. Transfer the turkey to the roasting rack set inside a roasting pan.
