“Not only did I sense the Native American presence, but the hotel is very comfortable and pet-friendly, two pluses in my book. Hotel Chaco houses an outstanding collection of original contemporary Native American and New Mexican art. As an art lover, I appreciated all the significance of the artwork throughout the hotel. From the lobby doors to the artwork and light fixtures on the walls and the staff uniforms, they are all part of the hotel’s ambiance. The décor of each guest suite blends with the artwork that adorns its interior. Even the sandstone color of the building and landscaping I found had a spiritual meaning.

“Venture up to the top floor, Level 5 and enjoy a drink watching the sunset while taking in the marvelous city skyline,” Cori recommends. “The view is mesmerizingly calming.”

“The Hotel Andaluz in downtown Albuquerque was the fourth hotel Conrad Hilton ever built and the city’s first high-rise,” explains writer and television producer Angela Fairhurst of  Jaunt TV.

“It was ‘the place’ where wealthy guests stayed when they pulled into the Santa Fe railroad train station. It was and still is within walking distance from everything in downtown.

“Constructed in 1939 in New Mexico’s Territorial style, a blend of Pueblo and Victorian styles by architect Anton F. Korn, the high ceiling lobby and lounge with its quaint indoor cabanas, fountains and character has stayed true to itself through multiple restorations,” Angela explains.

“Andaluz is short for ‘Andalusian,’ the region of Spain that also inspired the hotel’s décor and architectural style. A traditional Andalucian arch enriches the public spaces. As part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, the boutique hotel with 114 well-appointed spacious rooms and suites is on the National Register of Historic Places.”

We stumbled upon this hidden gem at the recommendation of Allen Affeldt, the owner of La Posada in Winslow, Arizona, another restored historic inn.

Fifty unique guestrooms are in three areas on Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm’s 25 acres. The Meem rooms date back to the original Hacienda built by renowned architect John Gaw Meems in the 1930s. Old dairy buildings are the inspiration for the Farm and Field rooms. They surround courtyards and offer quiet areas to soak in views of the acres of lavender and the Sandia Mountains.

   • And similarly, I thought I knew Wisconsin and didn’t need to visit. But since I have, I’m finding such hidden gems. Most of my time in Wisconsin was spent on the western part of the state, since I grew up in Minnesota. I also managed an office in Eau Claire, WI. Now I’m learning about the north eastern part of Wisconsin – cheeses, of course, incredible meats and sausages and beautiful countryside. Lake Michigan and more…including this dog sledding experience.
