Pasture Based Farming: Farming That Heals the Land

On our farm, everything starts with the soil.

Why It Matters

We believe that when you take care of the land, it takes care of you.

That’s why our family has taken the regenerative farming path. 

The foundation of our farming system is rotational grazing.Each day, we move our livestock to fresh pastures. This practice allows the pasture to have a rest period to regrow which maximizes the amount of forage produced by increasing the capacity of the plants to photosynthesize.It also allows the plants to feed the soil biology with the sugars they need to thrive.In return, the soil microbes extract minerals from the soil and provide them to the plants.

In this system, the soil continually improves and the forage produced is of the highest nutritional content.

Putting It Into Practice

Our cattle are moved to a new section of pasture every day using moveable electric fences made up of polywire reels and step in fence posts. Our chickens live in moveable, floorless huts called chicken tractors.  Every day they’re moved to a new piece of pasture.  We fill their feeders with a NON-GMO grain feed to supplement their diet.Moveable electric poultry netting is used to both contain our turkeys and keep  them safe from predators.  After each move their feeders are filled with NON-GMO grain feed.Our pigs have access to sections of pasture close to the barn. They’re allowed to graze in the pasture as well as laze in the barn for shade.

We maintain a system of poly piping throughout our pastures that allow us to continually provide fresh water to our livestock wherever they may be.As our livestock graze, they naturally fertilize the soil, encouraging deep roots, strong grasses, and a thriving ecosystem of plants, insects, and wildlife. 

Over time, we’ve watched our land come alive with more birds, more pollinators, more insects and more biodiversity.

On our small, family-run farm in Southern Ontario, we raise pasture raised chicken and grassfed beef with care and integrity. Our chickens are kept in mobile shelters known as chicken tractors, giving them daily access to fresh pasture, clean air, and a natural, plant-based diet — just the way nature intended.
