But all is not lost! Did you know that there are some clever ways to turn everyday household items into smoke-friendly devices?

When you think about it, weed only really needs three components to smoke. They are:

  • Oxygen
  • Airflow
  • Fire

As long as you have the weed and a way to incorporate all four together, you should have no trouble lighting up. Sure, in some cases, water is another great element that can improve your smoking experience. However, it isn’t a necessity (although some would argue otherwise).

If you’re wanting to make your own bong, then yes, you’re going to need some water. That being said, it’s important to understand the mechanics of a bong and how it works before you attempt to MacGyver your own. 

So, if you’re stuck at the house and wanting to light up, the only trouble most people run into is the fire component. If there are no matches or lighters handy, you might have to get creative with the toaster or stove and some candles.

Assuming you are all set, it’s time to choose an item that will be sufficient in helping you smoke your fresh batch of weed.

Choosing the right household objects to smoke out of

Think of smoking weed like you’re about to cook something. You have all of the necessary ingredients; you just need to find a pot (no pun intended) to put it in. This is where it gets interesting. 

The following household items are tried-and-true methods for smoking weed in a pinch. And don’t worry. You don’t actually have to be MacGyver to make them work. But if you are-that’s really freakin’ dope. Rest in Pieces.

Apple

That’s right. An apple will serve nicely as a device for smoking weed. “How”, you ask? It’s quite simple, really. Take the apple (don’t bite it) and pull off the stem. Now, using a screwdriver or similar tool, poke a hole until you’re about halfway down into the apple.

This ensures that the “chamber” is air-tight. Now it’s time to make a mouthpiece. To do this, poke another hole on the face of the apple. You want to penetrate far enough into the apple so that it connects to the top chamber you just created. 

If you need a carburetor, you can keep pushing until you make an exit hole on the opposite side of the apple. This will allow any smoke in the chamber to exit through the carburetor hole.

Finally, using the top of the apple (where the stem was) as your bowl, place your weed there and light up. It’s simple, quick, and effective. Even better, you’ve got a snack waiting on you afterward.

Soda Can

This is a common one that most people know by heart. Lay a clean and empty soda can on its side on a flat surface, like your kitchen counter or coffee table.

Gently push in on the can and create a small “crater.” Now, very carefully, use a knife or other sharp instrument and poke tiny holes through the crater you just made. This where your weed will be placed for smoking.

Next, poke a small hole on the side of the can adjacent to the holes you just poked. This is optional, but if you need a carburetor, you’ll want to do it. 

Make sure you tear the aluminum tab off the mouthpiece, as this is where you’ll inhale the smoke. Finally, place some weed onto the crater area. With your thumb over the carburetor hole and your mouth over the mouthpiece area, light up the weed and smoke away!

It’s important to note that you should be very, very careful when poking holes through the soda can. It’s easy to slip as you’re doing it, so make sure your other hand isn’t in danger of getting cut.

Pen Pipe

This is another MacGyver moment that is simple in its creation yet quite useful when complete. You’re essentially crafting a small one-hitter here. You will need to make sure you’re using an ink pen that you can break down into just the tube portion.

You will need to remove the writing cone at the “top” and the small plug at the “bottom.” Don’t forget to remove the ink cylinder!

With your empty tube in hand, simply pack a small amount of weed into one end and fire it up. Remember, though, you’re going to be gradually melting plastic. So go easy, using very short bursts of fire.

Gravity Bong

If you want to make a device that yields the best results, a gravity bong is the way to go. Smoking your weed out of this will deliver excellent hits that rival that of a well-rolled joint. 

To execute said bong, you will need to use a 2-liter bottle and a Mason jar. Now, fill the Mason jar about ¼ of the way full. Then, using an empty water bottle, you want to remove its bottom. Now, using aluminum foil, drape a small portion over the spout. 

Poke small holes all through it, as this is where your weed is going to rest when you’re ready to smoke. With the bottle pressed into the water, light up your weed, and slowly let the bottle rise. In doing this, gravity is sucking up all of the smoke that’s inhaled into your body.

Use caution with this method. If you aren’t prepared for it, the hit can be extremely powerful. Those who are uninitiated usually cough something fierce. If, however, you are a seasoned smoker, you should have a very effective and enjoyable experience.

Water Bottle Bong

Smoking out of a water bottle bong is perhaps the easiest and most effective way to get the most out of your weed in a pinch. It’s also a great way to finish off a handful of roaches from leftover joints.

It should be noted that this household method also comes with powerful hits. So if you aren’t accustomed to such, you might want to opt for a smaller, more straightforward method.

For those who enjoy bigger hits, you will find the water bottle bong to be a very effective and easy way to smoke your weed. 

You are going to need to create two holes in your water bottle. Most people just use a lighter to burn them into the bottle. One hole will be for your carburetor while the other will be where your weed goes. 

Your mouth goes over the drinking spout like usual. Make sure that the “weed hole” is small enough so you don’t have to worry about weed falling through and into the bottle. When ready, place your weed on the hole and light it.

Allow the water bottle to fill with plenty of smoke and then inhale. Get ready for take off.
