6. Coloring The Character - 4: Clothes - CLIP STUDIO TIPS

[1] Shading clothes

Next, I paint the other parts such as the clothes.

 

① When shading, the clothes' colors are temporarily changed to lighter ones, as it’s hard to see shadows on dark colors.

After selecting the “Other” folder, which has the base color layer of the dress and other items, the [Layer color] effect is applied from the [Layer Property] palette and set it to white.

 

Additionally, a new layer for shadows is clipped to the folder. The layer’s blending mode is set to [Linear burn].

 

② First, all of the shadows are roughed in with the [Pen] tool → [G-Pen].

 

③ The rough shadows are then detailed with the [Brush] tool → [Opaque watercolor].

The entire image is detailed while keeping the sharpness of the shadows.

 

④ Lighter shadows are added for more volume. Colors are layered with the same method as the darker shadows.

 

⑤ Finally, disable the folder’s [Layer color] effect that was set to white.

 

That concludes the shading.

 

[2] Adjusting the shadow colors of the clothes.

Next, I adjust the shadow colors.

As the shadow colors of the pink parts of the clothes look dull, they need to be saturated.

A selection area of all of the pink parts is made by right clicking the layer containing the pink parts and selecting [Selection from Layer] → [Create Selection] from the displayed menu.

Returning to the shadow layer, the shadow color is adjusted with [Edit] menu → [Tonal Correction] → [Hue/Saturation/Luminosity].

 

Using the same method, all of the shadows are corrected accordingly.

 

[3] Adjusting the base color of the clothes

A new layer is created above the layer with the clothes painted in dark blue, and [Clip at layer below].

A gradient style blur will be added to this layer.

By adding a bright gradient to the clothes close to skin, the skin becomes more vibrant and the matte blue becomes more clear, along with other effects.

 

With this, the coloring of the clothes is done.
