Here are 6 effective and easy ways to dry and preserve your favourite bouquet of flowers. [ If you would like to find out how to make fresh flowers last longer, click here ]
Hang drying a bouquet upside down is the easiest and most effective way to dry most flowers. Simply tie your bunch with a twine or string and hang them upside down. Ensure to keep the bouquet away from direct sunlight. Remove any leaves as they retain moisture and will slow down the drying process. Once your bouquet is completely dried, you may opt to spray some hairspray over your flower to preserve the flower’s shape, making them less susceptible to breaking.
Silica Gel (that curious little package you find in your shoebox) is an alternative method that dries flowers quickly. Simply place your flowers in an air-tight container of silica gel and leave it to dry. Do ensure the container is tightly sealed as the silica gel may absorb the moisture from the air, slowing down the drying process. Typically, roses takes about 3 weeks to completely dry.
This method is especially effective on flat flowers such as daisies. Simply take an encyclopaedia or any other heavy books and line a page with paper or parchment paper. Arrange the flower on the paper such that they do not overlap. Close the book and leave it untouched for 1 to 2 weeks. Once the flower is dried, your dried flower can be used as a bookmark or even framed up as a picture.
Water drying is a traditional method of drying. Flowers dried through this method maintain their original appearance. This method works especially well on robust flowers. Simply fill your vase with a small amount of water and place your bloom into the vase. Leave the vase in a cool and dry place. Over time, the water will evaporate and the flower will dry out more naturally. Once the petals are crisp, the drying process is complete.
