7 Unmistakable Signs Spring Is Coming In Texas (or Anywhere!)
Maybe your like

Today is the first day of March which means spring is coming soon. I could not be more thrilled that it is quickly approaching, mainly due to the fact there are so many beautiful things about spring that I love!
Spring, first of all, holds many childhood memories for me. Just like my summer memory, or my back to school memory, I have fond nostalgia for this glorious season too!
It was always that time of year when I became giddy about the upcoming summer vacation. Daydreaming would begin about all the fantastic things I would do when the weather was warm, and I was pumped!
Each year, there are certain signs popping up all around that confirm spring is on it’s way. No matter what the weather is like in Texas, nature always know that spring days are coming. Last year at this time, we had snow, ice, and freezing temperatures the entire end of February into March. The year before, we moved into our house on March 1st thinking it would be warmer then, but it was a record low of 10 degrees! Walking outside was PAINFUL!
This year has been a very mild winter without snow, ice, and very few days that were cold. I am still excited for the changing of seasons though!
So, what are those signs I know spring is coming in Texas?

Probably the BEST part of spring approaching is the days beginning to get longer. When my husband comes home from work, we actually have time to take a walk before dark. In the winter, it is dark by 5:30, so there is no chance of outdoor activities in the evenings. It is SO nice to end the day with a walk outside!
Two. The birds start chirping! The birds always know exactly what time of year it is, and without fail, they start making their debut in my backyard in February. By March, they are in full swing! I have a bird bath and multiple bird feeders in my yard, so I just love watching them start coming outside to enjoy the coming of spring.
Fact about me: Along with having a degree in chemistry and studying horticulture, I also took an ornithology class in college (study of birds). One of requirements each week was to meet at the park when the sun was rising and go bird watching! It sounds easy, but it was actually really hard! We had to be able to name every bird we saw with it’s correct name and it as a grade! Many people failed that class because it was hard.
My husband laughs at me because to this day when we are outside walking around, I will point out each bird by the name! I’ll say, “Oh, wow an Eastern Bluebird, or look, an American Robin! “#nerd
Three. Bluebonnets start popping up!Texas is obviously known for it’s Bluebonnets, but they are absolutely beautiful and so unique! I adore them and love going on Bluebonnet hunts around our area to find the best patches of this pretty blue flower.
When we first moved into our house in March 2014, I was walking out in our backyard and stopped dead in my tracks when I saw this patch of unmistakable Bluebonnet leaves, and sure enough, a few days later they were in bloom! I was so happy we have an entire area of them in our yard!
If you follow along on snapchat with me (username :: alexisroch) you saw that we planted more this past weekend!
You know spring is here when the Bluebonnets start showing up!

It is funny, but despite the temperatures or weather, my rose bushes always start growing at the end of February and beginning of March. They will put on a ton of new leaves, and I will start to see little buds forming!

And, if you have a patio garden, stay tuned because I have been working on my post for potted mini rose bushes which will be going live soon!
Five. The trees start budding! On our walk the other day, I saw a redbud tree already putting on it’s pretty purple blooms! We also have these Dogwood trees that produce these enormous cotton ball looking blooms that look fake because they are so big. By March, you will always see these starting to bloom. I talked a little bit about these in my Stop and Look Around my Neighborhood post!
Some years, those blooms last for weeks and I love it!

I love mowing…a lot! I am the woman you see outside pushing a lawnmower on a sunny, spring day (yes, even with RA lol). I was thrilled to hear the sounds of lawnmowers starting up this weekend in Texas. We are already having some growth in the yards.
The smell of a fresh lawn is one of my favorite scents of all time. It reminds me of being a kid, helping my dad out in the yard! The sounds of the lawn being mowed is definitely a sign spring is coming in Texas!
Seven. The park is FULL of people playing sports, walking, and the sounds of kids playing! The park is totally the place to be in spring! We took a long walk this past weekend at our local park downtown, and I was thrilled to see all the people outside. There were baseball games going on, kids playing, people walking/running…it was one of the busiest times I have seen that at park!
You can tell people are super excited about spring coming!

So, what your favorite signs that spring is coming where you live? I remember when I loved in California, I really missed the mark of the changing seasons…it was always nice there, so I never saw noticeable differences. In Texas, it is night and day between the seasons…and sometimes each day!
Happy soon to be spring!
