Alright, this may be a little choppy; I'm trying to adequately organize my thoughts.
According to the combined-spelling rankings (http://www.namenerds.com/uucn/pop.htmlOpens a new window), there are 21 names from the boys' top 200 that have 20 or more spellings variations. Kaden has the most, at 55. On the girls' lists, though, 45 names just in the top 100 have at least 20 spellings. Kaylee holds the top spot with 79 different spellings.
Discussion fodder:--Are alternate spellings out of control, or is this a great way of showing creativity?--Parents are apparently way more eager to tweak the spellings of their daughters' names than their sons'. Why? My personal thought is that this practice is holdover from a time when girls just had to be cute & memorable and catch a man; not taken seriously as an independent working adults. Am I insane?

- pPinkTights Posted 02-10-12I personally hate alterer spellings. I love traditional spelling of names and sometimes I think the world has gone mad. Hope traditional starts to make a comeback. People will forever be asking "and how do you spell that?"

CRAZYNESS!
Who prefers Kaeyleeigh to Caley? Ugh.

About the girls having more unique spellings than boys, I know exactly what you are talking about. I think that it is easier to pull of a trendy/madeup/crazyspelled name for a female rather than a male. I have no clue why, I just do. You don't see MALE players in the NFL or MALE students in Ivy League colleges or jocks with names like Blaiyzee. Ya knoww?
BanRos Posted 02-10-12I agree...out of control. I think that some variations can be quite nice or a beautiful take on an older-looking spelling...but most...blech!!!
- bBrookie81 Posted 02-10-12Yes, it is waaaaay out of control. I do not understand the rampant need to alter spellings. It really struck me when, in my area, I heard of a new baby named Ivey. Yes, Ivy with an E. Why? Just...why???And I think there are so many variants with girl's names because parents are focusing on finding a "cute" name for their daughters. On this board, I've seen girls names described as "cute" or in the OP "Is this name cute??" time and time again.Women I think sometimes tend to think of babies (and more often girls) as these little people who will always be small and "cute" and innocently charming, and just don't bother to consider if the name will age well or carry a woman through life in a way that will serve her no matter what she decides to do or who he becomes. It's almost like a cuteness competition really. And then I think that if a parent finds a name that they love is more popular than they had thought, that they will just tweak the spelling to make it more "cute" and as you said, memorable, or to stand out.On the flip side, parents don't usually describe wanting their son's names to be cute, but rather, "strong" and "masculine." It's as if people want their son to betaken more seriously, and they push their daughters into this ridiculous competition of one-upping one another, even with their names. As a parent of both boys and girls, let me tell you: moms of girls push their daughters to be the pretreat and the cutest, and there is an undercurrent of witchyness to it all.Conversely, moms of boys push their sons to be the strongest and the toughest. I think all of these unspoken expectations bleed over into the child's naming as well. And since there is this need with women to "one up" each other, thesis why you see all these far-fetched aberrant names and why it's become so widespread. Interesting topic!
- eegkvol Posted 02-10-12I think parents are also making boys names look cute. Example: Blake= Blakely, Blakelee, Blakeleigh, Blaqlee or whatever they imagine. I also think some people just don't know how to spell and they guess. Margret verses Margaret.
- lluckyrooster Posted 02-10-12The "girl/cute" thing was a lesson of it's own in my college child development class. People have a tendency to praise boys on their work and girls on their looks-- yes even these days, yes even after this feminist movement. Maybe it's still a subconscious thought when naming girls. You see it a lot here-- "Julian is too feminine and weak for a boy. But Michael is so cute and spunky for a girl!" Umm... what?
Shanamahtopoeia Original PosterPosted 02-10-12I've always wondered how people can have such disparate styles between genders--even in their own families! I see all the time on BBC & IRL--"Our sons, Benjamin & Michael, and our daughters, Briyonna & Maleiya". I mean, WTF?

The funniest to me is the number of spellings for "Nevaeh". IMO, it's only a name because it spells "Heaven" backwards. Anything other than Nevaeh just looks absurd - like the mother is nothing shy of a complete idiot.
I know we didn't spell DD's name with the traditional spelling, but still, I cannot believe how many ways "Amelia" was spelled last year! Emilija, Emileah, Amileah, Ameleah, Emiliah and Emmilia are particularly "yikes"!
