History of green

Green symbolized regeneration and rebirth in ancient Egypt. Back then, the Egyptians used malachite, a copper mineral, but that pigment source had a few downsides. It not only was expensive but it would turn black over time.

The solution to that came from ancient Rome where they found out that soaking copper plates in wine would create verdigris, a green pigment that develops after weathering the metal.

They used this green pigment for murals, stained glass, and mosaics. However, medieval monks also used this hue to color manuscripts.
