“I will vanquish the evil in you.”

Juliet Landau’s directorial debut is a bold one, to say the least. Part mockumentary, part experimental drama, but all parts meta and introspective, this is one of the most personal projects I’ve seen a filmmaker undertake. Without a hint of irony, A Place Among The Dead is... Lynchian.

The theme of narcissism is easily accessible via the metaphor of the vampire, attempting to deconstruct society’s obsession with youth and purity, particularly in Hollywood.

For the full experience of the film, it’s important to be across the individual players’ contributions to the vampire sub-genre. This cast is ridiculously stacked, from Bram Stoker’s Gary Oldman to Ron Perlman (Blade II), Lance Henriksen (best known as…

Evil looks in the mirror and sees a special person

A Place Among the Dead is a scripted docu-drama that explores narcissism and vampire mythology. It is also Juliet Landau’s own abuse survivor narrative. She has something to say, and that’s remarkable enough. How she goes about saying it doesn’t feel fully realized as a film per se, but is more of a play or black box performance piece in terms of how it stages its idea. And I don’t mean that diminutively. This took a lot of courage to make and I respect the hell out of that.

Landau’s take on vampires is fresh. She jettisons the usual psycho-sexual analysis for something more personal, a theory of narcissism and…

This is the directorial debut of Juliet Landau, best known as the evil vampire villain Drusilla on TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Clearly very personal, it’s an interesting hodgepodge of mock-documentary, found-footage-horror, and meta fiction, it stars Landau as herself, beginning as making a documentary about peoples’ attraction to vampires in order to research a new role and later going down a rabbit hole helping the police research a series of murders that have been committed by someone who appears to think they’re a vampire.

The film is definitely rough around the edges and unfortunately, the higher the stakes get toward the end, the less convincing it is. But the mock documentary elements are quite compelling, even though I wish…

Holy SHIT this movie is good. Very upsetting, but good. Really got under my skin. A phenomenal movie about the human relationship with the vampire mythos, but also about the boundaries between not being complacent while other people are victimized and stepping so far into the dark that you become a victim yourself. It’s also a who’s who of vampire/gothic/horror media icons. Honestly, the main reason this movie doesn’t get a whole five stars from me is because of Joss Whedon’s very brief appearance. PLEASE check this movie out, but be mentally prepared beforehand, because it’s a truly chilling downward spiral.

Such a fantastic and unique movie - part horror, part experimental, part found footage (though not in a traditional sense), APATD is a brisk and powerful exploration of a theme using a vampire framework. It does not shy from vulnerable reflection, and because it blurs the lines of personal experience and fiction, it asks the viewer to reflect on their own experiences. Some of this reflection is difficult because we have to ask if we've sometimes been the villain. To me, this is the purpose of horror - it opens a path to a better understanding of yourself and gives you an opportunity to consider what you wish the future to be.

Vampire Therapy

This is an incredibly unique movie, part therapy session, I doubt being raised by Hollywood parents back in the day was anything short being fed into a stump grinder feet first, part documentary about the appeal of vampires in modern society with a lot of big names from Gary Oldman to Anne Rice to Kim Newman to Ron Perlman and Lance Hendriksen and then part found footage true crime investigation into vampire murders but it is all catharsis. Juliet Landau is working through a lot of stuff here and is very real and raw especially towards the end when she is deep into the investigation. It is a super unique movie that definitely blurs lines between reality and…

This film helped me a lot. Because I chose to end my relationship with my dad, I didn’t feel like I had the right to mourn the loss of that relationship. I felt guilty. But this film finally allowed me to grieve the relationship with him that I lost, and grieve the loss of the man I used to know and love.

This is a beautiful, powerful film, and a really interesting spin on vampirism.

Thank you, Juliet & Dev❤️

A murderer thinks he's a vampire. A former vampire actress helps the police with a documentary about vampirism.

This is actually low budget arthouse. A mockumentary that constantly switches between expressionistic moments and overdriven serious camp.

Actress Juliet Landau makes her directorial debut with this peculiar work. Emotionally exposed, surreal, lined with dream logic and reflections on evil and ageism.

It gets off to a somewhat sluggish start, but is intensive and won't let you go once you get involved.

I so very badly wanted to love this. Had some interesting themes and ideas, but ended up as a big, structure-less collage, which can sometimes be wonderful, but in this case just worked against itself. My friend sent me this from their website advertising the film:

“So this is in part a personal introspection on being a part of the Hollywood system and fame, a movie in which vampirism is an analogue for media consumption and excess, an interview doc with actors who have played vampires saying what they think evil is, and a found footage style horror/serial killer movie.”

Edit: Watched the QnA from the world premiere, and Juliet really does have lots of super interesting ideas! Wanting to…

I saw the UK premiere of this film. It's a scripted Vampire film that also brings into play the current social psychological issues of narcissism. It is a horror film that reflects and questions good and evil. It uses the concept of the vampire to create a visual dark poem that makes one ask questions of the poisonous attraction of a narcissistic personality in the form of a man parent or monster and expose the evil of that state of mind.
