A Story to Read When You First Fall in Love (2019) - First Impressions

Drama: A Story to Read When You First Fall in Love (English title) Romaji: Hajimete Koi o Shita Hi ni Yomu Hanashi Japanese: 初めて恋をした日に読む話 Director: Ryosuke Fukuda Actors: Kyoko Fukada, Kento Nagayama, Ryusei Yokohama, Tomoya Nakamura, Katsuhisa Namase Writer: Aki Mochida (manga), Tomoko Yoshizawa Before Ayase Haruka, Satomi Ishihara, Yui Aragaki, Erika toda etc. it is Kyoko fukuda that was considered by many as the queen of Japanese Drama, so it's no surprise whatever drama she has done there's a high chance it will be a hit because of huge following she has. I also think she popularize the cute and clumsy type of characters so if not for her we wouldn't see those type of characters in Jdrama today. In this drama she played the role of Junko Harumi, who was once a model student, she has chosen not to have boyfriend in middle school and high school because that's what her parents want which lead for her having trouble finding a relationship once she became adult. She also failed to enter Tokyo University and her life has not gone smoothly since then. Now at age of 31, she works as a teacher at a private institute. This drama depicts the regrets and worries of female in their 30's really well. Does she look 30 though? very unfair right. lol This basically is a reverse harem where a lead female character has 3 gorgeous men that has different personality in front of her. Masashi Yakumo is her cousin but smart, Kyohei Yuri is a rebellious high school student and Kazuma Yamashita is Kyohei’s teacher in high school. In the first episode it's obvious that they want you to ship her with Kyohei Yuri because they had more screen time together. It is also similar to Chugakusei Nikki because of teacher and student romance which the female lead is older. But unlike Chugakusei Niki it is less controversial probably because it is comedy and lighter. Other characters are like side characters but maybe that will change as the story goes. The pacing is dorama-ish if you know what I mean, which is good since it is a rom-com. Literally no dull moments, it has mix of serious, cute, funny, sweet, touching moments and also has colorful characters. The chemistry between Junko and Kyohei lit too, which only makes you feel guilty since he is underage lol. First episode is already comparable to great Jdrama romcoms that most people enjoy so I highly recommend this drama if you are looking for a cute rom-com that will make you feel good.

Best Student-Teacher Romance Japanese Dramas/Movies

Image Student-teacher Relationship is a very controversial genre, and not everyone will like it. We all know this relationship is wrong, but this is not real life; this is just drama. It doesn't mean a story was made that they are already glorifying or romanticizing the act. Just like other controversial stories like "infidelity dramas", "gay-themed dramas", "historical war movies" or movies that seemed they are glorifying stealing and killing, It's best to separate your morals and reasoning from a story and try to see it through neutral eyes, you don't have to agree to enjoy it. My Teacher (2017)   Movie: My Teacher (English title) / Teacher! Is It Okay for Me to Love You? (literal title) Romaji: Sensei! 、、、Suki ni Natte mo Ii Desuka? Japanese: 先生! 、、、好きになってもいいですか? Sachiiro No One Room Review

Image Drama: A Little Room For Hope (English title) Romaji: Sachiiro no Wan Rumu Japanese: 幸色のワンルーム Actors: Anna Yamada, Shuhei Uesugi Director: Ryuichi Honda Writer: Hakuri (webtoon), Shinya Hokimoto Network: TV Asahi, ABC The backslash this drama is getting is coming from people who think this drama is romanticizing the idea of kidnapping, but if they just proceed and watched the show they would realized why the guy done it, in fact I wouldn't call it kidnapping but giving shelter to a pitiful girl.  I'll give you a heads up if you expect something like romantic love in this drama you would be a bit disappointed as I don't see it as portrayed as romantic but more of a platonic love, it's the same feeling when we see a cute stray cat, it makes us wants to keep it and make it safe from harm. Sachiiro no Wan Rumu is based on a manga of the same name, it's kind of famous on manga fans so expect it will also get anime adaptation soon. As... Read more

Tokyo Love Story 2020 Review

Image More than a love story this whole tale is a commentary on Tokyo's state during different period of time, the Manga which is written during the bubble era, the 1991 drama before it pops, and the modern version when the economy is more stabilized. Each represents wild energy, uncertainty and resolve which would resonate in the character of Rika. The story described her as the living image of Tokyo, and in these 3 versions there is a dialogue where kanji says Rika is Tokyo itself. Having said that Tokyo Love story is not remake but a reimagine, reimagining the same characters and story bits in modern times. It reminds me a lot of what they've done with Final Fantasy 7 who also got a lot of hate from boomer mindset alike, and just like how gameplay in modern final fantasy changes over time and so for Japanese dramas, the mundanity of the old was replaced by more fast paced approach, and elements such as female empowerment was added to fit the theme different from its predece...
