The star was killed on the way home from the shoot for 'Rock The Boat'...

By NME 25th October 2001

These are the final, haunting images of AALIYAH recorded in the days before she died.

The R&B star had been making this video for new US single ‘Rock The Boat’ shortly before she died on August 25. The day after she finished the shoot on the island of Abaco in the Bahamas, she was killed along with her entourage in a plane crash.

The Cessna 402 light aircraft crashed shortly after take-off for its journey to US, killing Aaliyah, her entourage of seven and the pilot. An investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.

‘Rock The Boat’ producer Kevin Taylor described the video as “very ethereal and heavenly”. He said: “There are lots of shots of water and clouds, and the video ends with Aaliyah swimming up from the bottom of a pool, almost looking like she’s going into the clouds. It’s really beautiful.”

The video’s director Hype Williams commented: “Everyone put their heart and soul into the work, as we always do, with the intent that the world would enjoy it. I know there’s a lot of pain involved, but that’s all the more reason people would appreciate what we’ve done as a group.”

‘Rock The Boat’ is released in the US as a radio-only single. Aaliyah‘s ‘More Than A Woman’ is due for release as a single in the UK next January.
