Aaron Donald and the Los Angeles Rams restructured his contract tie and the defensive lineman became the highest-paid non-quarterback in the entire NFL.

Details of Aaron Donald's contract extension

The agreement between the champions and the player means an increase of $40 million for the remaining three years of his current contract, with no new years added. The three remaining years, worth $95 million after the agreement, make Donald the first NFL player, who does not play the quarterback position, to exceed the annual average of $30 million per season.

The deal includes $65 million guaranteed for the next two seasons, and is structured in a way that will allow Donald to retire or return for the 2024 campaign for the additional $30 million guaranteed, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Aaron Donald had threatened with retirement

The defensive lineman indicated on the "I Am Athlete" podcast that his return for the 2022 season was going to be contingent on receiving a new deal, and that he would be "at peace" with his career, should a new agreement not be reached.

The University of Pittsburgh graduate sealed the Rams' victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI when he pressured quarterback Joe Burrow into committing an inaccurate pass down the stretch in the fourth quarter.

When did Aaron Donald get drafted the NFL?

Selected by the Rams 13th overall in the 2014 Draft, Donald is the centerpiece of a "win now" roster filled with high-priced veterans such as quarterback Matthew Stafford, corner Jalen Ramsey and wide receiver Cooper Kupp.

Donald's 98 career sacks rank sixth among active players and are tied for fourth all-time in the first eight seasons of a player's career.
