Picture Rich Hoffman is the meteorologist for News 12 Long Island's Morning and Afternoon Editions (5am to 3pm), producing more than 40 weather casts per shift. Rich joined the News 12 weather team in September 2002. Rich also provides weather forecasts for JVC Broadcasting, including radio stations: MyCountry 96.1, LI News Radio 103.9 and Party 105.3. While growing up on Long Island in the Town of Babylon, Rich loved to go to the beach with his family. The weather always played a role in whether his family would hit beach favorites like Cedar and Gilgo Beach. So by the time he was nine, Rich was tracking weather systems. He quickly developed a love for forecasting. After graduating from West Babylon High School Class of 1990, Rich headed north to fulfill his dream of being a Meteorologist. Rich earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Atmospheric Science and a Bachelors of Arts in Communications from the University of Albany (SUNY), in New York. Following graduation, Rich began his television career in 1996 at WNYT in Albany. From there he moved west to WETM in Elmira, New York. After Elmira, Rich worked at WVNY in Burlington, Vermont where he enjoyed the cold snowy winter. In a move to try to get closer to Long Island, Rich was off to the Nutmeg state where he landed a Meteorologist position at WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut. Before coming home to NEWS 12 Long Island, Rich worked at and NECN in Boston and WGGB-TV in Springfield Massachusetts. Since working at NEWS 12, Rich looks at things in a different light. Rich starts his day by getting up at 2:45am in the middle of the night, when its pitch black. Then its time to get ready to be at work by 4am to prepare the weather forecast and weather maps which you see everyday on NEWS 12. Since 2005, Rich has been a Professor at Farmingdale State College teaching: PHY 116 Introduction to Meteorology. When not at work, Rich tries to stay active. Rich loves to ski, was on the ski team at Albany and also played rugby for the Great Danes . He loves to be outdoors, whether it’s skiing, biking or hiking, running marathons or Triathlons. Rich has run 10 marathons, completed more than 20 triathlons plus Finished the 2008 Lake Placid IRONMAN (Swim 2.4 Miles, Bike 112 Miles, Run 26.2 Miles). Now that Rich is back home again, he can enjoy all of Long Island’s outdoor adventures, including the beaches from Long Beach to Montauk. As for sports, Rich roots for the NY Mets, NY Islanders, Buffalo Bills and the Dallas Mavericks. Rich is very active with many different charities and organizations. He is a part of Team and Training, which helps raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. He has raised more than $30,000 participating in a Marathon, Triathlon and 100 mile Bike ride. Since 2012, when Rich had open heart surgery to replace his Aortic Valve, he has worked with the American Heart Association to promote heart health. Recently, Rich's nephew has been diagnosed with Lupus and Rich has been helping with fundraising and helping promote awareness. Rich is a member of the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society. Rich earned the prestigious American Meteorological Society's Seal of Approval #1156, in 2000 while in Burlington. In 2006, Rich earned the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) #190 seal.
