Green Bay Area Facts

History

Green Bay is Wisconsin's oldest city. Nearby trading posts were home to a variety of Native Americans and the Fox River a virtual highway to the waters of Green Bay.

The very first European visitors to Greater Green Bay were very successful entrepreneurs. From beaver pelts for European hat makers in the 1600s, to the invention of the world's first splinter-free toilet paper in the early 1900s, our ancestors used the area's waterways to grow the community's prosperity. Blessed with an abundance of natural resources, Green Bay was, and continues to be a major shipping center.

The city's largest employers remain the paper and shipping industries. Known around the world for contributions to industry and agriculture, no history would be complete without mentioning that Green Bay is the smallest city to host a National Football League team. Founded in 1919, the 13-time National Champion Green Bay Packers are the only NFL team to be owned by its fans. The community is widely known as "Titletown."

Location

Green Bay is located in Northeastern Wisconsin on the Bay of Green Bay and west of Lake Michigan.

Tourism

In 2018, Greater Green Bay's tourism industry employed about 12,143 full-time equivalent residents. $697 million in economic impact is attributed to the travel and tourism industry. In 2018, traveler expenditures in the Greater Green Bay region (Brown County and Algoma) contributed $43.5 million in local taxes.

Transportation

Green Bay is home to Austin Straubel International Airport, the third-largest airport in Wisconsin. Major highways converge in Green Bay. Travel from Chicago (208 miles) via Interstate 43 or State Highway 41. Interstate 43 also connects Milwaukee (117 miles) to Green Bay. Highway 29 is a direct route to/from Minneapolis (279 miles). Public transportation is available, as well as taxi and limousine services.

KI Convention Center

The KI is the largest meeting facility in Northeast Wisconsin, with over 80,000 square feet of flexible meeting space. Located in downtown Green Bay, the KI is connected to a full-service hotel, with catering on-site. The convention center is conveniently located within walking distance of restaurants, shops and museums.
