- About Us
Let's introduce ourselves
We’re the UK’s fourth largest supermarket, with over1,050 stores across the UK (not to mention our growing global presence). But we know our success has only been possible thanks to our amazing Aldi colleagues. That's why we celebrate everyone's achievements, offercompetitive pay and create great working environments. And that's how we've become amulti award-winning employer - but it's the least we can do. We know that our people make Aldi mean even more.
It's been an incredible journey
-
In the beginning It’s 1913 and a small grocery store opens in Essen, Germany. There at the counter stands Anna Albrecht. Over time, she’s joined by her two little boys Karl and Theo.
-
Bold thinking By the 1930s, the family business is well established but the Great Depression makes things extremely difficult. Time for some bold Aldi thinking.
-
Gaining an advantage In a smart move, the Albrechts acquire a liquor licence, gaining an advantage over their competitors.
-
Customer loyalty They also let their customers buy goods on account and pay later. This results in huge customer loyalty.
-
Fresh approach Aldi reveal another string to their bow: liquid soap which doesn’t need a ration coupon. (They were the only retailers for miles who stocked this.)
-
Turnover soars The business wasn’t just surviving now – all these strategies send their turnover soaring.
-
Self-service store By now, Karl and Theo have already taken over the business. In 1954, they make history by opening their first self-service store in Essen-Schonnebeck. It’s a first in Germany.
-
Aldi Nord & Aldi Süd The brothers now own 300 stores, and decide to split the operations into Aldi Nord (North) and Aldi Süd (South) – which now operate independently.
-
Becoming Aldi They decide to think of a new name and come up with ‘Aldi’, short for Albrecht Discount.
-
Aldi arrives in the UK Aldi Süd are operating in Germany, Austria and America. In 1990, the business arrives in the UK. Customers are amazed to see a true example of ‘no frills’ shopping. Because overheads are kept low, customers can benefit from amazing quality at low prices.
-
Today The business model continues to work brilliantly. With award-winning products and astonishing growth, we’re going from strength to strength. We are one of Britain's fastest-growing supermarkets with more than 1,020 stores and over 45,000 colleagues.
Where are we?
Aldi is a discount retailer with global presence. We have over 7,000 stores across 11 countries and employ over 200,000 people. And in the UK and Ireland, we have anywhere from 50 to 100 stores in each region. So, we must be doing something right.

- Germany
Back in 1961, the Albrecht brothers split the business into two groups: Aldi Nord (North) and Aldi Süd (South). The latter (which includes Aldi UK) consists of over 5,000 stores. Did you know that Aldi Süd was the first big retailer in Europe to ban eight pesticides that were found hazardous to bees?
- Austria
We opened our doors in 1968. HOFER Austria's corporate headquarters are located in Sattledt & Eberstalzell, Upper Austria. The stores all over Austria are managed by several regional offices. In addition to national activities, many processes for all HOFER S/E countries are coordinated from Austria. HOFER S/E includes HOFER in Austria, HOFER in Slovenia, ALDI in Switzerland, ALDI in Hungary and ALDI in Italy.
- America
In 1976, one year after our 500th Aldi South store opened, Aldi US officially launched. We now have 1,500 stores across 34 states, plus recent expansion into California. This is where we initially launched our new concept store called ‘Aldi Food Market’ with fresh food and extensive chilled ranges at the heart of the offer.
- Ireland
As of 1999, we’ve been taking Ireland by storm. We’re committed to supporting Irish suppliers, with over half of our product range sourced locally. And they’ve proven a real hit, gaining a number of awards. Split into two regions – Naas and Mitchelstown – our RDCs service over 120 stores across the country.
- Australia
Opened in 2001, we’ve got 400 stores serviced by 6 Distribution Centres. 91% of Aldi Australia’s fresh fruit and veg are grown within the country. Now that’s some sustainable sourcing. We were also the first Australian supermarket to join the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (Sedex) which ensures more ethical practices in our supply chain.
- Switzerland
ALDI’s business model has proven its success in Switzerland like elsewhere. Since our launch on the Swiss market in 2005 as ALDI SUISSE, we have established ourselves as a trusted discount retailer meeting our customers’ demands for affordable and fair products. In addition to new product lines, sustainability initiatives and mobile phone plans, we still have lots of brilliant ideas up our sleeves to stay on top of the game.
- Slovenia
Just like our Swiss stores, we opened in 2005. Today we are one of the largest Slovenian grocery companies. Despite decades of success and expansion, our basic philosophy remains the same - to offer products of the highest quality at the lowest price, which we achieve through optimization and sustainable targeting in all areas.
- Hungary
We opened our first store in Hungary in 2008. ALDI Hungary’s corporate headquarter - together with its logistics center - is in Biatorbágy, close to the capital city. We supply our entire logistics center as well as our own stores with green electricity, and we offset our greenhouse gas emissions from our daily operations by supporting climate protection projects, thus operating carbon neutrally. ALDI Hungary belongs to HOFER S/E countries, coordinated by HOFER Austria.
- Hong Kong
Not many people know we’re in Asia, but here we are. In 2012, we opened the Corporate Responsibility Unit Asia in Hong Kong. Not only does it realise our CR goals in the continent, it also helps to forge closer relationships with our suppliers.

Corporate Responsibility
Our ResponsibilitiesEvery day, we work hard to ensure we're fairer to farmers, supporting great causes, inspiring customers to be healthy, and sourcing sustainable products. These are all part of our 5 Corporate Responsibility Principles.
Our CustomersWithout our customers, we wouldn't get very far. Which is why we put them at the heart of everything we do. From tackling campylobacter through to a range of customer-focused initiatives, we're giving back to the people who support us most.
Our Supply ChainWe truly value our suppliers. So we put them first in all of our sourcing activities. From ensuring fair labour practices through to our sustainable sourcing, we're also making sure our suppliers look after their people and the environment.
Our PeopleEven with high-quality yet affordable products, one asset stands above all else. Our people. It's why we create friendly, cooperative workplaces, and provide the opportunities, pay and benefits they deserve.
Our CommunityAldi's part of communities throughout the country. So from charity partnerships to food donations, we're giving a lot back to people in our local areas. And with international activities like Farm Africa, we're also helping people across the world.
Our EnvironmentWe're dedicated to improving Aldi's environmental impact in 4 key areas: lowering our carbon footprint, reducing the impact of our refrigerants, boosting our energy efficiency, and reducing, reusing and recycling our waste. Because it's responsible.
Learn moreWe tend to keep the great things we do for our customers, our people and the environment behind closed doors. But if you want to know more, you can discover everything great we're up to by visiting our main National Sustainability page.
