ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — The latest batch of hurricane season predictions were released today, and they still anticipate an above-average hurricane season.

Colorado State University Senior Research Scientist Philip Klotzbach, along with a team of researchers in the Atmospheric Science Department at C.S.U., say an above-average 2022 Atlantic basin hurricane season is likely, despite a quieter start than what we have experienced in the last two years.

Their report says in part, "We continue to anticipate an above-normal probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental Unites States coastline and in the Caribbean."

Colorado State's new forecast calls for a total of 18 named storms, eight hurricanes, four of those becoming major hurricanes of Category 3 status or higher.

RED CROSS PREPARES FOR ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON, SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FROM CAROLINAS REGION

This is lower than the forecast they published in July with 20 named storms, 10 hurricanes, and five major hurricanes.

The report also suggests that the odds of at least one major hurricane making landfall along the U.S. coastline this season have increased to 68%, which is higher than the 52% average in any given season.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also released its seasonal outlook.

NOAA's update calls for 14 to 20 names storms, six to 10 hurricanes, and three to five major hurricanes. Their early-season forecast was 14 to 21 named storms, six to 10 hurricanes with three to six major hurricanes.

NOAA and C.S.U. agree on similar weather patterns which contribute to an above-normal forecast: an ongoing La Nina, warmer-than-average-sea surface temperatures, and weaker wind shear over the Atlantic Ocean.

So far, we have had three named storms in the Atlantic basin: Tropical Storms Alex, Bonnie and Colin. Historically, we see an average of three named storms at this point in the hurricane season.

Currently, the Atlantic Basin looks clear of developing tropical systems, but some models point to more activity in mid-to-late August. The best things you can do now are to assemble a hurricane kit in evacuation-prone areas and have a plan, know your evacuation routes, consider flood insurance and pay attention to the forecast.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE 2022 HURRICANE SEASON

September is typically the most active time in the Atlantic basin.

Hurricane season ends on November 30.
