Excel provides different ways to add, change, and remove cell borders. Some border formatting options take only a single click.

Apply a pre-defined cell border

  1. On a sheet, select the cell or range of cells where you want to add or change the borders.

  2. On the Home tab, in the Font group, click the arrow next to Border  Border, and then click the cell border that you want to apply.

    Tip: To add or remove parts of a border, click More Borders at the bottom of the menu. Under Border, click the borders that you want to add or remove.

Remove all cell borders

  1. Select the cell or range of cells where you want to remove the borders.

  2. On the Home tab, in the Font group, click the arrow next to Border  Border, and then click No Border.

Create a custom border

Use cell styles to create a custom border that you can easily apply over and over again.

  1. On the Home tab, in the Styles group, click Cell Styles, and then click New Cell Style.

  2. In the Style name box, type a name for your new cell style.

  3. Click Format.

  4. Do any of the following:

    Choose a custom border line style

    On the Border tab, under Line Style, click the line style that you want to apply, and then under Border, click the specific pieces of the cell border to apply the line style to.

    Choose a custom border line color

    On the Border tab, under Line Color, click the color that you want to apply, and then under Border, click the specific pieces of the cell border to apply the color to.

  5. Click OK.

    Tip: To apply your new cell style, select the cells that you want to change, and then on the Home tab, click Cell Styles, and click the style.
