At Hammersmith Apollo tonight, Adele said this song is about how rumours that are untrue are believed. She said even her best friends believed she was in a relationship, with someone she had never even met, on the basis of rumours. This is a "sarcastic" (Adele's word) song dealing with how rumours can spread total garbage about people.

I absolutely love this song and someone like you, even though they relate to completely different ends of the broken relationship spectrum. It took me a few listens to piece together my interpretation which is: the song starts off with her in a relationship and her guy meets and falls for a new, younger girl who he eventually leaves his gf for....the guy soon realizes how much he misses his ex and begins sneaking around with her, she only agrees because she has a plan to get him back...the last part of the song reveals that she was playing him the entire time so that he would understand how she felt (People say crazy things, just cause I said it, don't mean that I meant it. Just cause you heard it)

I agree. This sounds pretty accurate. The first time I heard this song, I thought it was alright, but now that I've listened to it a few times and understand the meaning; it's a good song. haha i didnt see that cuming i agree reminds me of my friend...she did that to me once except it wasnt a relationship thing...it was more like i was ignoring her and she did the same thing...except she took it too far.

To me it's about a girl whose boyfriend left her for a younger woman. After some time the original girlfriend started spreading rumors that the boyfriend had been missing her/had an affair with her. Eventually the boy's current girlfriend starts to believe the rumor and breaks up with him leaving him lonely. The original girlfriend feels bad for telling lies, but is glad that she got back at his cheating ass ;)

i take it to be her singing about her ex who's getting with some hussy so she's spread the rumours and in the song she's disclaiming that she started them but then when that doesnt work she's like just cos i said it, dont mean that i meant it blah blah then the last line someone's been spreading rumours back about her cos she's now with someone new too but rumour has it she's leaving him for her ex

Commenting not because this song has anything to do with my life; I just heard it for the first time today as I was driving home. Man, that woman can sing! What vocal chords! Great song. Obviously soon to be a hit, unless it is already and I just don't know it:) I think Adele could sing the back label of a toilet bowl cleaner and it would sound amazing!!!
