What we do in this class:

In term 4 2025, Tracey Marning-Studin will be running a course How to start an acrylic painting on canvas” This will include planning a composition, an introduction to colour mixing, and painting techniques. There will be demonstrations, experimentation, and exercises. You will then be applying this onto your canvas.

In the Building Basics class we have lots of tutor-led activities and room for personal extension as your confidence and skill base builds. This is an ongoing term class.

Who: This class aims to cater to the absolute beginner as well as those who feel there are gaps in their understanding of the basics. No previous experience is needed. Within each unit we’ll  incorporate aspects of the following:

Colour The wonder of colour mixing and colour harmonies through colour mixing exercises, viewing works by selected artists, and applying this to projects on canvas. We will be looking at ways to apply acrylic paint. Ways of applying paint will be demonstrated and you will have the opportunity to experiment, observe and apply.

Composition: The basic elements of composition and design will be introduced along the way. These are built into everything we do when creating artwork.

Drawing: We will cover structural and observational drawing, the versatility of charcoal and graphite.

Studio procedures: Studio practice – stay organized, stay safe, have fun.

This is an ongoing class, which means that your enrolment continues for the year unless you give notice that you are not continuing. Fees are paid via the term.

Approach:

The course cycles through different units over the year. Some students decide to stay in this group for more than year. At any time a student may decide to move into the Intermediate to Advanced group.

Acrylic is the main painting medium taught in this course. Other media introduced throughout the year will include charcoal, graphite and watercolour.

It is our intention that these basics will then become the building blocks for further extension. The course is carefully structured with a balance of direction, guidance and flexibility.

The emphasis is hands-on. To facilitate this, there will be demonstrations, discussions and viewing of relevant selected artworks.

We aim to introduce you to the basics of painting and drawing in a supportive and flexible environment. Flexibility is important. Every class, and every student, is unique. Where necessary and applicable, the course will be adapted and tailored to the on-going interests and developing expertise of the class and the individual members of the group.
