T R T I have a 2008 crew cab 1500 Silverado with the 5.3 How do you know if it has AFM? My truck doesn't have the 3-4 buttons by the instrument panel. It just has the little peg up by the speedometer. I've read on line that it is standard on all the 5.3 litres. #1 · Oct 24, 2014 I have a 2008 crew cab 1500 Silverado with the 5.3 How do you know if it has AFM? Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Oct 24, 2014 It is standard on all of the 5.3 engines. Btw, for the price of the 4 button switch, you can get the DIC display working. The display is there and the wiring is there. You might also want the trim piece, but it can be cut for the switch assembly. #3 · Oct 24, 2014 Then why can't I get it to display on the DIC? Seems like if it is standard it would be displayed so that I would know if it was working or not. #7 · Oct 25, 2014 Because you don't have the switch assembly. If you buy and install the switch assembly, the DIC will display. 0 Reply #4 · Oct 24, 2014 The only things that display are: milage, trip, trans temp, oil life and relearn remote key...and in my manual it said that it is an option. #5 · Oct 25, 2014 I would sure guess you 2008 has AFM as part of the 5.3L engine design. My friend's 2007 has AFM. My 2013 doesn't, as I have disabled it. #6 · Oct 25, 2014 The only visible sign AFM is working will be when it switches modes it will read 4 cyl or 8 cyl in the DIC. Some vehicles wont switch back and forth unless their on a flat road at steady speeds and under 2000 rpms. #8 · Oct 25, 2014 Well thank you for all of the input. So how long should I expect this motor to last? #9 · Oct 25, 2014 I have 3 2008 model trucks in my fleet at work, with proper maintenance theyve managed to run up 148k, 156k and 178k. No major issues on any of them and all still running strong. Another of our shops did loose an engine at 52k. #10 · Oct 25, 2014 You do have AFM. From the 2008 Silverado Owners Manual. Any manual will never tell you what you cannot do. It explains what you can view but the AFM is not displayed unless you have the DCI button rack. Text Font Line Number Parallel Active Fuel Management™ Your vehicle’s V8 engine may have Active Fuel Management™. This system allows the engine to operate on either all or half of its cylinders, depending on the driving conditions. When less power is required, such as cruising at a constant vehicle speed, the system will operate in the half cylinder mode, allowing your vehicle to achieve better fuel economy. When greater power demands are required, such as accelerating from a stop, passing, or merging onto a freeway, the system will maintain full-cylinder operation. If your vehicle has an Active Fuel Management™ indicator, see DIC Operation and Displays (With DIC Buttons) on page 3-57 or DIC Operation and Displays (Without DIC Buttons) on page 3-63 for more information on using this display. DIC Operation and Displays (Without DIC Buttons) If your vehicle does not have DIC buttons, the information below explains the operation of this system. The DIC has different displays which can be accessed by pressing the trip odometer reset stem located on the instrument panel cluster. Pressing the trip odometer reset stem will also turn off, or acknowledge, DIC messages. The DIC displays trip and vehicle system information, and warning messages if a system problem is detected. If your vehicle does not have DIC buttons, you can use the trip odometer reset stem to view the following displays: odometer, engine hours, trip odometer, transmission temperature, trailer brake gain and output information for vehicles with the Integrated Trailer Brake Control (ITBC) system, oil life, Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) programming for vehicles with the TPMS, Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter programming, and display language. If your vehicle has DIC buttons, you can use the trip odometer reset stem to view the following displays: odometer, engine hours, trip odometer, and display language. #11 · Nov 15, 2014 For me it was purely on principle, with only a little of the potential problems in view. I am an old Cavalry Sergeant. I expect everyone to "pack their gear". I paid for 8 cylinders, and I expect them all to work. No government/union inspired smoke breaks and such by some of the cylinders. They all should work, all the time, anytime the key is on. If it helps to alleviate any possible oil consumption issues and other stuff that some have experienced, that is just icing on the cake. But that was not the only thing that got fiddled with right out of the gate. I also disabled the daytime running lights and the backup warning sensors. Both of which have their own unique issues when one uses a pickup around the farm. None of this seemed an issue on a dealership lot, but once out in the real world, not so cool.
