Roles[]
Depending on their abilities and playstyle, agents are assigned to one of four roles determined by the game.
| Role | Official Description | Summary of Role |
|---|---|---|
| Controllers are experts in slicing up dangerous territory to set their team up for success. | The abilities of agents under this role allow them to assist their teammates by cutting enemy vision, taking control of an area, and forcing enemies into choke points. | |
| Duelists are self-sufficient fraggers who their team expects, through abilities and skills, to get high frags and seek out engagements first. | Agents under this role have abilities that allow them to focus on being the first to enter sites and engage the enemy. Unlike other roles, the Signature abilities for Duelists need to be recharged with 2 kills rather than a period of time. | |
| Initiators challenge angles by setting up their team to enter contested ground and push defenders away. | The abilities of agents under this role focus on initiating attacks on site, flushing enemies out of hiding spots and corners in order to assist the team when charging into battle. | |
| Sentinels are defensive experts who can lock down areas and watch flanks, both on attacker and defender rounds. | The abilities of agents under this role focus on defensive play, with emphasis on supporting the rest of the team through providing intel, anchoring down sites, and preventing the enemy from flanking. |
List of Agents[]
There are currently 6 Controller agents, 8 Duelist agents, 7 Initiator agents and 7 Sentinel agents in the roster, bringing to a total of 28 playable agents overall.
The numbers in the "No." column are in the chronological order of when the agents were recruited by the VALORANT Protocol. You can find their numbers in game by going to their gear and looking at their banners. There is an eighth agent in the VALORANT Protocol but their identity is unknown, and they are not yet a playable agent in VALORANT.[1]

Upcoming Agents[]
There are currently no details for any upcoming agents.
Agent 08[]
Agent 08 is a character currently missing from the rosters of both the VALORANT Protocol and the VALORANT Legion. It is confirmed that they will eventually appear at some point when their story is ready to be told, though there is no info about them on the side of gameplay or development as a playable agent.

Development[]
Riot was aiming to launch the game with 12 agents, but only 8 were available in the early press builds. The March 29, 2020 private event introduced Breach. Since the Closed Beta launch on April 7, 2020, Raze was added, bringing the Agent total to 10. [2]
It is the intention of the developers that a new agent be released around once per act. New agents take 12–15 months to develop, and their design is focused around points such as what's missing from the game's current playstyles, are there any prospective thematics that present big opportunities, and what’s needed for better game health.[3]
Trivia[]
- The height of all agents in game is set to 1.96 meters.
- The in-game heights of the agents have to be kept the same so that no agent's height has an advantage over others, but the canon heights of the agents has been shared by the game's Creative Director.[4]
- As of Clove's addition to the game, Neon is the shortest agent and Breach is the tallest.
- The in-game heights of the agents have to be kept the same so that no agent's height has an advantage over others, but the canon heights of the agents has been shared by the game's Creative Director.[4]
