Air Tubs: Everything You Need To Know | Discover

At the end of a stressful day, a glass of wine just isn’t going to do it. A long, peaceful soak surrounded by bubbly goodness (enhanced only by some more bubbly in a glass) will soothe your body and mind so that you can face every day.

Confused about the options? Here’s everything you need to know about air tubs.

What is an air bath?

An air bath (also known as an air tub) is a tub equipped with many jets that blow heated air into the bath water, surrounding the bather with millions of massaging bubbles for an effervescent sensation. The jets are often adjustable to allow bathers to customize the force of the air emissions, choosing a more or less powerful massage.

What’s the difference between an air tub and a whirlpool tub?

Jetted tubs can seem confusing, but the difference is actually quite simple: air jet tubs use air to pamper the bather while whirlpool jet tubs propel water out of the jets at high pressure for a more invigorating, intense massage.

If you enjoy both kinds of massage, consider a combo tub, which has both air and water jets so that you can choose your sensation based on your mood.

What are the advantages of an air tub over a whirlpool tub?

While most consumers make their choice based on the type of massage they prefer, air bath tubs do have some benefits that whirlpool tubs do not:

  • Air tubs are quieter to run than whirlpool tubs
  • Air tubs are self-drying and self-cleaning – simply turn on the jets in an empty tub (some have special drying cycles) to dry the jets and tub – while whirlpool jets require more maintenance
  • Air tubs can cost less than whirlpool tubs as the mechanism is less complex (though cost depends on many factors, including material, manufacturer, and other features)
  • Some bath products and soaps are compatible with air tub use but not with whirlpool use

What benefits does an air tub provide?

In addition to overall relaxation and tension relief, air baths activate the production of endorphins to encourage a positive frame of mind, stimulate blood circulation and the lymphatic system, and relieve pain caused by arthritis and chronic disorders.

What shapes and styles do air tubs come in?

Air tubs are not restricted to the old built-in rectangular style any longer! You can have your style and your jets, too. Choose a freestanding air bath to make a statement, or virtually any other installation – alcove, undermount, drop-in, corner, and even walk-in air tubs are readily available.

You may also choose from many shape options to fit your bathroom and your body type: oval, round, square, and hourglass in addition to the traditional rectangular.

Air baths are also available in several types of material, including classic acrylic, contemporary solid surface, and – for lovers of the wow factor – even copper air tubs.

Air bath cleaning and maintenance

Air tub manufacturers provide specific cleaning instructions for every tub; it’s important to follow the directions and clean your tub regularly to prevent buildup and damage to the jets and the tub. While air tubs are fairly low-maintenance, regular upkeep will prolong the life and quality of the tub.

  • Generally, oil-based bath oils, salts, and other additives should not be used in jetted tubs as they may clog the mechanism (salts should be avoided so as to prevent rusting). Water-soluble products should be used in moderation; use bubble bath in small amounts (as the jets will quickly stir up a huge amount of bubbles). Choose products that are approved for use in jetted tubs.
  • After emptying the air tub, run the drying cycle or turn on the jets until the tub is completely dry. This will also dry the jets completely.
  • Clean the tub regularly with your preferred cleaning products, especially if you use bath additives. Avoid harsh chemicals as they can damage the jets or the tub finish.
  • Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for tub maintenance before using a product or cleaning method on your tub; using an unapproved product can void your warranty.

How much does an air tub cost?

Air tub prices vary widely based on the material, size, and system of the tub. These tubs are largely affordable and fit into a variety of budgets; you can experience air tub bliss for less than $1,900 or for as much as $25,000 or more.
