All About Growing Organic Lettuce In Singapore

Where to get Seeds?

I have got seeds from the following website (www.ecocityhydroponics.com) ,  you can buy other places also.

Since  I am busy mother, I can’t go to store to buy seeds with my kids though I ordered from Online and they charged S$3( 1000 Seeds 2$ and 1$ delivery charge). More than 90% seeds are germinated for me :).

 Container

I used two to three types of recycled containers for growing lettuce, the one with zero cost is Farmhouse or meiji 2L empty milk bottles. We took empty bottle and washed thoroughly  after container dried filled with compost.

Compost

we bought 20kgs of compost for 20$ in Punggol, its expensive or not I don’t know because we don’t have any other availability near our house.

Planting seeds

After that we planted the seeds in the container and they got germinated in 3-7 days.we need plenty of leafy greens so nitrogen fertiliser is best for leafy greens.

Watering

I water more in the morning because lettuce is a cold crop and Singapore is tropical country so if u water daily in the morning it wont get bolt quickly and u can harvest for more no of times.if u use milk bottle like me u need to water daily if u use big container u can water thrice a week or when the container dried out.

Sunlight

leafy greens can grow in semi shade or direct sunlight to six hrs. sunlight is enough for this plants and my lettuce is growing in 2-3 hrs of sunlight in my balcony.you can use semi-shaded net cloth if its getting too hot outside.the most important thing and very good thing in Singapore is we don’t have any seasons so we can grow year around with little bit afford.

Organic fertilisers

I used fish fertiliser for nitrogen and see weed extract for quick germination used fish fertiliser once in for  every 10 days. I used all these organic fertilisers for more leafy growth because i am growing in small place and I need plenty of harvest for home made sandwiches and home made burgers and salads.if u have more space or u don’t need that much harvest u don’t need to use these fertilisers.the leafy greens still grow if u have good organic compost.

Plant growing stages

after plant produces its true leaves(plant produces second set of leaves) i transplanted then in the milk jar.

Harvest

You can harvest 2-3 months or more from one plant if it wont get bolt.

Storage

you can store the fresh leaves in air tight closed container for 3-7 days. Freshly eating is always healthy… 🙂
