All About The Original Nine Titans In Attack On Titan - Suki Desu

The Titans in Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) are terrifying and fascinating. And, as we all know, not all forces are equally irrational or approximate. There are nine particularly powerful titans that are the foundation of this universe and are quite different from each other.

Throughout the three existing seasons of the animation, viewers encounter many of the Nine Original Titans. Examples include Beast Titans, Giants, and Armored – a lot of work for Aaron, Mikasa, and others. Below is a brief description of the powers of each of the nine original titans, which emerged after the death of Ymir Fritz, the first to awaken the power of the titans.

The History of the Nine Titans

About 2,000 years ago, Ymir Fritz obtained the power of the Titans and became the first Titan, who was later known as the Founding Titan.

Thirteen years later, she died and her power was then divided among her three daughters who had been forced by their father to consume her remains.

Eventually, the powers would further divide into the Nine individual Titans, which were later inherited by nine of her descendants.

The Nine Titans soon destroyed the ancient nation of Marley and conquered the entire continent to build the Eldian Empire.

As family relationships play a significant role in the passing and inheritance of memories from the previous heirs of the Titans, the Nine Titans typically resided in noble families during the reign of Eldia.

The Nine Titans fighting each other in the Great Titan War

The noble families that held the Nine Titans, besides the Fritz family, were in a constant state of conflict with each other, but the Founding Titan maintained peace.

When the 145th King, Karl Fritz, inherited the Founding Titan, he was greatly ashamed of his people’s actions and held sympathy for Marley. He conspired with the Tybur family as atonement for his ancestors’ actions and fabricated the story of Helos, a Marleyan hero who defeated King Fritz.

They managed to incite a civil war, the Great Titan War, with the help of the Marley people, and while Eldia was collapsing from within, Marley took control of seven of the Nine Titans, with only the Founding and Attack Titans escaping their grasp.

They distributed the Titans they had (except for the War Hammer Titan) among the Eldians loyal to them known as Warriors. Karl Fritz then moved many Eldians to Paradis Island and built the Walls creating thousands of Colossal Titans, which hardened to form three concentric walls.

The king then erased the memories of the Eldians on the island, except for some minority races that were immune to the power of the Founding Titan.

The Tybur family was allowed to keep their Titan because they were the first to fight for Marley, leaving them and the Reiss family (the renamed Fritz family) as the only remaining Eldian houses that retained their Titan after the war.

The Reiss family later lost their Titan to Grisha Yeager in the year 845. After Grisha’s Attack Titan consumed Frieda Reiss’s Founding Titan, the two Titans merged into one; this resulted in the number of Titans being reduced to eight.

Founding Titan

Linked to the other types of titans, it can control the minds of other creatures. It can not only force other titans to perform specific actions but can also change their memories – but, in theory, this is only possible if the humans who dominate it are of royal blood or come into contact with a true blood titan.

Attack Titan

Always ready for battle, the Attack Titan is probably one of the easiest physical abilities. However, whoever controls it can access the memories of others who have controlled it or will control it (yes, in the future!). As you know, this is the Titan of one of the main characters of the anime Eren Yeager.

Colossal Titan

Taller than almost all other Titans, the Colossal Titan currently controlled by Armin Arlert, one of Eren’s childhood friends, appears in the first episodes of the anime. Its powers include emitting extremely hot steam and possessing immense brute strength.

Female Titan

Currently under the control of Annie Leonhart, the Female Titan has terrorized many of the humans in Attack on Titan.

Her appearance is somewhat reminiscent of the Attack Titan, but being more deadly due to Annie being a great martial arts fighter, turning her into a difficult opponent to defeat, but she ended up being defeated by Mikasa and Eren (transformed into a titan, of course).

In addition to all the traditional physical attributes of titans, one of her abilities is to attract pure titans and harden her skin to make it as hard as diamond.

Armored Titan

Reiner Braun is one of the main antagonists of Attack Titan, from the perspective of a celestial man.

The character inherited the power of the Armored Titan at the age of ten and has since played the role of a warrior. As the name suggests, his main feature is a shield that protects his muscular body like a large armor.

His brute strength can be seen at the beginning of the animation when he and the giant titans invade the walls of Paradis Island. The Armored Titan can also transform parts of his hands into claws for climbing and fighting.

Beast Titan

The Titan that most resembles animals, the Beast Titan has the appearance of different animals depending on who conquers it. One of its abilities is to speak like a human even while transformed, and it can also throw objects with absurd precision and harden its own flesh.

Currently, the one in control of this titan is Eren’s half-brother, Zeke Yeager. And by having royal blood, he can control other Eldians and turn them into common titans, as long as they have taken his spinal fluid. Being extremely intelligent, he can employ the most difficult strategies to win.

Jaw Titan

The Jaw Titan may be quite small compared to other Titans, but that certainly does not make it any less dangerous. On the contrary, due to its small size, it can move extremely fast, and its teeth and claws can destroy practically anything.

This Titan in combat is a great danger to any opponent, even if they are much larger than it. And it had as its bearer: Marcel Galliard, Ymir, and more recently Falco Grice.

Carts Titan

Currently controlled by Pieck Finger, the Cart Titan is certainly not one of the most dangerous when alone, but it is extremely important for its allies to serve as support, and one of the moments that proves this was when it saved the Beast Titan from Levi Ackerman. Another function of this titan is to transport many other things, besides defeated people.

War Hammer Titan

The War Hammer Titan made its first appearance in the fourth season of the anime, but made a big impression showing how strong this Titan can be. Its powers include transforming parts of its body into various types of weapons, one of its unique abilities is to be controlled from a distance by the user if they see fit.

It was controlled by Lara Tybur, sister of Willy, leader of a traditional Marleyan family. But she lost her power after being defeated by Eren Yeager.
