“Monsters” is a song about a toxic person who you just can’t let go of. Instead of blaming the person in question, Alex sings lines of self-doubt. It’s a relationship where one person simply can’t let go, like they “don’t mind if you fuck up my life”.

The song features hip-hop artist blackbear and was supposed to have a music video to go with it. Unfortunately the shoot was cancelled due to COVID-19. As a replacement, the band released a lyric video made by Toon53 Productions when the album dropped.

The song is also guitarist Jack Barakat’s favourite from the album, as stated on their Happy Hour livestream.

Kerrang spoke to frontman Alex Gaskarth about the track.

This was done in Palm Springs, in the later part of the process. We knew once we’d written it that we had something special; there was an energy that felt like it was going to be one of the standout songs on the record. Andrew [Goldstein, songwriter] had been working with blackbear on his new music, and as we were listening back to everything, he spoke up and said, ‘It would be really cool if we sent this to blackbear!’ We had never thought of that before, but he was really into it, and he sent back this thing to Andrew saying, ‘This is kind of the headspace I’m in at the moment anyway, so I already feel like I could write something for this.’ It really elevated the song, and took it to this new, refreshing place that we had never properly explored before. We’ve never really collaborated with someone in rap or hip-hop, and this brought a lot more energy to the song. It was a fun one to do!

Mutual friends. We’ve been friends with blackbear for a while but never thought to collab. And then Andrew Goldsteen, he was the initial producer on the song, has been doing a lot of the new blackbear stuff. So it really just worked out that we were all kind of working together at the same time but peripherally. And then Andrew suggested we send him a song and see what he thinks and what happens. We did. He came back with that second verse and this took the song to a completely new level.
