ECU ResetDefinitionThe ECU "learns" about your engine as you drive the car. The "learning" is actually a process that the ECU uses to track the tolerance changes of the sensors and actuators on the engine. Two examples of these values are the position of the idle-air bypass valve (automatic choke) at idle with the A/C on, and the trim gain on the injectors. The ECU stores these "learned" values in battery backed-up RAM so that it doesn't have to start from scratch the next time you turn your engine over."Resetting the ECU" is the process of clearing all the long term memory from the ECU's memory. These variables trim idle speed, fuel, spark, and more. The ECU will also store trouble codes for diagnostic capability. Unfortunately, some error codes cannot be cleared by resetting the ECU. Although they don't appear on your dash, it's still logged into the ECU's memory. That's for my ride anyway.

 

That way, the manufacturer gets to know what errors were encountered when one claims no mods were carried out. They safeguard themselves against warranty when non-approved mods are carried out. Only way to clear is if you have access to certain aftermarket tuning software.

just remove the neg side of the battery... abt 2- 3 min can already.. simple as that.. [scholar]

It might be better to get it done at your regular workshop where they plug in their diagnostic thinggy to do the reset. You also won't loose your radio, clock settings etc.

Before you remove the neg.-ve side of the battery, make sure you have your radio code if not you will have a problem later.

Almost all European and US cars radio sets have a default radio code. The code is input into the car CPU in the factory. Before the radio is dimantle for repair, the owner must make sure he or she has the code, without the right code keyed into the the radio set - the CPU not allow the radio to function.

Many Japanese cars you can dismantle the battery to try and reset codes but don't attempt this method on European and US cars unless you have a factory code reader to reset the cpu programm back to defaut. If you do not have, for some make the CPU programm will go into the limp mode - allowing you drive at a very slow speed back to the authorised workshop for resetting. For some make you can drive but will be very erratic - the keep-alive memory will monitor and collect information on the driver's driving style for maybe more than 300 to 400 km before the default/new setting is restored.

 

The simple and best solution is to have a memory saver plug into the cigarette lighter socket before dismantling the battery for service or to reset codes.

Some of the makes you can get the info from the car user hand book - if not available you will have to contact the agent. You have to provide the car VIN and other info.
