Allegiant flight cancellations leave passengers stranded on vacation

South Bend, Ind. — Thousands of customers are angry with a major airline company in South Bend for cancelling flights.

Many try to rebook their trip online only to learn they have to do it over the phone. One South Bend man calling them "travel victims."

One travel Allegiant travel story left a local and his friends stranded in Las Vegas.

It started as a short get-away that soon became a cancelled return flight, hours of being on hold and the group being split up to three different airports.

Stranded on vacation with the worse case scenarios available to get home for local flyer Tom Szekendi.

"We landed in Las Vegas, and everybody turned their phones on and it was just mass chaos because Allegiant had sent us an email that stated that our flight home on Sunday night from Las Vegas to South Bend was now cancelled," Szekendi said.

The trip was supposed to be 3 days. Szekendi's group spent the majority of it waiting at the help kiosk.

"By the time we got up to the ticketing counter, they could not get us all in our group back to where we had to go. So one person had to go to Indianapolis. Four of us got to go to Grand Rapids," he said.

Four weeks later, it happened again on another trip. His return flight got cancelled.

"I could not rebook online," Szekendi said. "It was forcing me to call the customer service number page. I probably spent a half-hour trying to even get a live dial tone."

Szekendi's cancellation chaos is something travel agent Michele Boyd has seen a surge in.

"The last few weeks have been the worst. There's no question. We usually have a phone on hold to Allegiant so we could get through to someone. Over the weekend with people having issues, I was on hold once for seven hours before the answer," Boyd said.

She advises you to begin checking your flight status one week in advance... making sure you have travel insurance... and making sure the airline has a way to contact you.

"The main thing to do is find out the reason and make a note of it. Because that could impact your refund. And it could impact a need that information for insurance if you have travel insurance," Boyd said.

An Allegiant spokesperson says their flights are being canceled due to a labor shortage.

She added passengers will be re-routed or refunded but did not specify how long that could take.
