Almost Everyone In Lower Michigan In Line For Next Snow

In our current weather pattern, the next snow is already waiting in the wings. The next snow should give accumulating snow to most of Lower Michigan.

This won’t be a heavy snow, but it will be a steady 12-hour snow.

The storm system arriving Thursday is coming into Michigan from the southwest. The southwest to northeast storm track is always a track we watch for heavy snow. In this case however, a lot of the moisture will be used up in heavy rain to our south in Kentucky and Tennessee. This keeps the abundant moisture from getting up into the northern cold side of the storm.

There will still be plenty of moisture for snow across Lower Michigan. It just won’t be what Michiganders call a “snowstorm” in late February. I asked you on a Facebook Live weather broadcast what you consider a snowstorm at this time of year. The most common answer was 6 inches or more of snow.

So this is going to be a general snow, but won’t live up to your snowstorm status.

Here is the radar forecast showing you this widespread snow.

radar
Radar forecast from 2 p.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Friday.

The snow will start late Thursday afternoon over Southwest Lower Michigan. The snow then quickly spreads east and north to cover most of Lower Michigan by the second half of Thursday evening.

This model only goes to 7 a.m. Friday. You can imagine the snow will be ended Friday morning. The snow should be done over eastern Lower Michigan by 10 a.m. Friday.

Here is the radar forecast at 7 a.m. Friday, showing you Friday morning will be slow-going.

snow
Radar forecast at 7 a.m. Friday, February 25

The snow should be over in southwest Lower Michigan before 9 a.m. Friday and over before noon in southeast Lower.

I’d call it a 2 to 4 inch snow for most of southern Lower Michigan. There will be a lot of 2 inch and 3 inch totals, with isolated 4 inch totals. If there is a place that would have a higher chance of getting the 4 inches, it would be the far southern part of Lower Michigan. Far southern Lower will be closer to the engine of the storm.

snowfall
Total snowfall forecast by noon Friday, February 25, 2022

The northern half of Lower Michigan will be more likely to have just one or 2 inches of snow.

The snow won’t melt right off the roads quickly Friday, as temperatures will stay in the 20s. Some afternoon sunshine may help melt the snow on pavement.
