Alright, Let's Get Something Straight. - Ava Falls

OKAY I HAVE TO INTERJECT HERE.

As much as I love the idea that the Stan twins are short for personal reasons, Stan’s height, like everyone else’s height, varies greatly depending on who he’s played against.

This is something Alex Hirsch pointed out back when people were arguing about Stan, Ford and Fidds’s heights. Like most cartoon characters, their heights vary depending on the scene. And even when they’re consistent (for example, Stan’s height in relation to the kids’s height is pretty constant, though even that varies a little) the size difference between characters is exaggerated for visual interest and storytelling.

Dipper is obviously not 1′10 inches. For one thing, if he were he’d be only half an inch taller than the shortest living adult on earth. Granted he’s still an adolescent and not done growing yet, but that’s still incredibly short.

If he and Mabel were 1′10″ (or, well, 1′10″ and 1′10″ + one millimeter) their height would be the first thing you noticed about them. They would constantly be mistaken for much younger children, probably toddlers. (The average height of a 2 year old is about 2′10.5″, more than a foot taller than Dipper’s height by this measurement.)

A lot of their insecurities, especially Dipper’s, would be surrounding their height. It would be the first thing bullies tease them about. And they would probably be suffering from a number of medical conditions.

Besides, if we go by that logic, the “tall” characters like Bud and Soos aren’t really going to be more than a gnome or two taller than Stan, meaning even the tallest people in the entire town are still extremely short.

Manly Dan is a good example both of how silly it is to try to measure people by gnomes, and how heights can vary from shot to shot. Look at this image from Dipper vs Manliness:

Given that both of these characters are standing up straight (with Dan maybe losing at most an inch or so from leaning slightly forward) and that Dipper’s legs, which account for about a quarter of his height extend below the frame, Dan is less than two Dippers tall in this shot, about 1 and ¾ Dippers.

But compare that to this shot from Headhunters:

In this scene, where Dipper and Dan don’t have to fit into the same medium-distance shot, and where Dan’s height is being emphasized, he’s nearly 2 ½ Dippers tall, and that’s accounting for the fact that he’s standing a little farther back in the frame.

If we measure Dipper by the gnomes and measure the other characters by Dippers, that would make Manly Dan–who is probably the tallest human character in Gravity Falls, and whose massive size is the first thing you notice about him–somewhere between 4′6″ and 3′2″ making him significantly shorter than me, a tiny tiny person.

If the tallest person in Gravity Falls was less than five feet tall tourists visiting the Shack would tower over everybody.

It just doesn’t make any sense to measure them this way, nor does it really make sense to measure them against each other since their relative heights vary from scene to scene and shot to shot.
