AMA Style Citation Tips

How do I cite publications from the US Government Printing Office?

If an author lists US Government Printing Office as the publisher, AMA prefers you to obtain the name of the issuing bureau, agency, or department, if possible.

Government Publications

Government/Agency Bulletin:

References to bulletins published by departments or agencies of a government should include the following information, in the order indicated:

  • name of author (if available)
  • title of bulletin
  • name of issuing bureau, agency, department, or other governmental division
  • date of publication
  • page numbers (if available)
  • publication number (if available)
  • series number (if available)
  • online accessed date (if applicable)
  • web address (if applicable).

Government Reports:

Tip: Government Reports are treated the same as an electronic journal and book reference.

  • Apply the same rules as journal style for articles and book style for monographs.
  • Include the published and updated date (if available) as well as accessed date

Example:

WomensHealth.gov. Statistics: autoimmune diseases. Updated June 17, 2009. Accessed January 11, 2012. https://www.womenshealth.gov/a-z-topics/autoimmune-diseases

U.S. Government Accountability Office. Reported Status of Department of Defense's Enterprise Resource Planning Systems. 2012. GAO-12-565R. Accessed April 2, 2012. http://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-12-565R
