To our treasured fellow book enthusiasts: As of January 1, 2025, And Literacy For All (ALFA) will cease operations in Lee County, Florida. Ed and I will be moving and changing our permanent residence to another state, where we will continue, in some form, ALFA’s mission to promote family and community literacy one book at a time. BelieveNBooks (https://www.believenbooks.org), a youth-led local non-profit organization has a similar mission as ours: “providing children with new and gently used books to expand their horizons and enhance their understanding of the world.” Founded by Natasha Agarwal in 2021 when she was in 8th grade, she and her mother, Aditi Maheshwari, have agreed to continue ALFA’s Free Book Friday tradition at Harlem Heights Community Charter School as well as steward our Free Book Boxes located throughout Lee County. Ed and I would like to thank you for your support over the last seven years. Because of you, over 50,000 books have found forever homes in our community. I trust that the children of Lee County will continue to benefit from your generosity through your support of BelieveNBooks. I want to personally express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported ALFA through the years to promote literacy and make books available to those who otherwise may not have had access. Wishing you peace, joy, and happy reading! 😊 Mary Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him. Maya Angelou Our Mission is "Building family and community literacy one book at a time." We have just achieved a new major milestone--
50,000 booksredistributed throughout the community--One book at a time! This school year, we provided over 6,500 books through our in-school program to the children at Harlem Heights Community Charter School. Through our Take-a-Book-Tuesday program, we read aloud to every class once a month and offer each child free, culturally relevant, and age-appropriate books to take home and add to their at-home library. We also regularly re-stock our 14 Free Book Boxes, located throughout the community, with a wide variety of primarily children's book titles. A love of reading is critically important to the development and success of every child. Reading is the basis of all learning. We express our sincere gratitude for your financial support and the books you have donated. These contributions have allowed us to redistribute books throughout the community, making a real difference. We are working hard to ensure that every child has the reading material and encouragement they need to support their growth as someone "who loves to read."
